Good Morning,Good Afternoon,Good Evening (Depending Where You Live), :)


A couple of days ago I went to a doctor's appointment.We were talking and I had mentioned something I read in a medical book we have,and for the first time in years I saw Doc get a little annoyed.He said "I would appreciate it if you didn't read that,or go online for that matter searching for answers to what's wrong with you.When I asked him why,he said "The information that you come across is not always exactly indicative of what may be wrong.He said Jason if you wake up tomorrow with a headache,look it up in the book or go online and see what happens.

What happens is you get million different causes for a headache.A book or the Net doesn't know your medical history or anything about your body and the meds you take.He said that some people read these things and then come to believe without any prior knowledge of their system that they may have that particular ailment,and in a lot of cases misinterpret what they read,making my job more difficult.

When I got home I started to think about it,maybe he's right,what do guys think?

I have to agree with him though. There's a million different causes for anything. Take a headache, for example. It could be allergies, it could be a hangover, it could be a tumor. You don't know.

I think the point he was trying to make is to not assume that you know more then he does. But I wouldn't stop researching stuff on your own.

:lol :lol I gotta admit Nova,that was cute.To answer your question,no it wasn't the same doctor.The doctor I mentioned in this post was my family physician.The other guy was an ER Doctor,believe it or not sadly,he committed suicide but no one would divulge any details as to the circumstances.I was pretty angry with the guy at the time,but quite obviously he had bigger problems.I truly feel bad for him,God, please forgive him.
 
Isn't there a Mark Twain quote that fits this? Something along the lines of "Don't read medical books because a typo might kill you." ?

While it's true sometimes misdiagnoses from doctors happen, it's probably a lot safer than trying to diagnose yourself.
 
$20.00 For A Box Of Band-Aids!!?

Hi Members

My brother's friend just left a while ago,I couldn't help but overhear their conversation with regards to healthcare(Canadian).One remark stood out though.He said that in the U.S. if they open a box of band aids in an American hospitals it costs $20.00!
I assume he's being sarcastic,but I don't know how.What does he mean?

If the nurses or doctors open a box, the hospital traditionally charges for the whole box, regardless whether they use one bandaid or the whole thing.

You should have seen the final bill for my son's delivery. The insurance company got charged for nearly everything. A box of sterile gloves, sheets for the bed, paper towels, etc.

Standard cost distribution. Despite what they may tell you, you are allowed to take the remainder of any billed items home with you because you (or your insurance) paid for it. In fact, you should take the leftovers with you because that keeps them from double-billing others for what you already paid for, which they do all the time.

In my opinion,yes.
A computer doesn't know you as a person,nor does know your medical history.When I asked him about it a while back,he said that's it's good to learn more about whatever affliction you have,but some of the info can be easily misconstrued.He's got a point.

I know I said that I wouldn't post anymore political or religious threads,but I think this one deserves the attention.Personally,I'm happy for you Americans.It seems that the new health care system has much promise.Again,I'm Canadian and I don't know much about politics,but I find American politics far more interesting than Canadian.

I'm anti-Obama, and that's all I'm going to as to not invoke any arguments. But I feel you guys oughtta know where I stand.

I'm all for universal health care but I don't think it's being done the right way, only time will tell. And yes, this is an EXTREMELY sensitive subject so let's try to keep it civil or it will be immediately closed and warnings and bans will be handed out.

Pretty much sums it up for me as well. I have nothing else to say on the subject because as you said, only time will tell...

I wish that politicians and uninformed citizens wouldn't be the ones making the decisions or making a fuss about this.

It concerns me being that I do work in a hospital. It concerns me because I want to make a career of studying cultural differences in health and disease. It concerns me because there are better ways to handle health and illness, but right now political agendas are guiding those decisions rather than those informed on health care.

Bureaucratic red tape is a pain.

I never have been an Obama supporter and I think this is a terrible idea. Also the large jump in my insurance premiums have me very concerned since I'm on a individual plan.

Just a bad idea. Why is this the only solution to the problem? Where am I going to get all that money to pay my taxes? :huh

Sorry but I am not a supporter of President Obama either. And this is not the type of change that I would expect.

I'm thinking that this is Pelosi's baby. Obama really only sat back and did nothing but encourage them on. I think the whole drama made him look weak as our President. But that is only one man's opinion.
