Nintendo Japan Confirms DVD Wii for 2007
New model expected to cost more than current Wii.

November 17, 2006 - Earlier this week, we posted a story regarding plans for a DVD-enabled version of the Wii (click here in case you missed it). Today, Nintendo Japan made its first official comment on the unexpected turn of events.

Nintendo confirmed via a Q&A at its official website that it will release a higher end version of the Wii in the later half of 2007. The new model will offer DVD playback, but is not expected to see any other changes, external or internal. Nintendo expects the new model to cost more than the standard 25,000 yen Wii due to the costs associated with DVD licensing.

Based on Nintendo's statement, it seems that, in Japan at least, gamers will be able to select between two Wii system SKUs later next year.

Those who purchase the current model Wii hoping for a DVD upgrade in the future may be out of luck. Japan's Impress Watch tech site reports that Nintendo currently has no plans to make the current Wii model DVD ready, neither through software nor hardware. Previously, Nintendo had planned on selling an attachment that would give the Wii full DVD capabilities.

ok... I have to admit.. I think selling a DIFFERENT SYSTEM IS RETARDED. I thought the Wii used normal DVDs for ggames any way... Just keep to the external DVD. Heck... Why couldn't they have a firmware upgrade for a PERHAPS HD DVD external device like the Xbox 360?

Keep it External... if you ask me. DON'T MAKE 2 DIFFERENT SYSTEMS!!! Sony is makin gthat mistake. And I DO think it's a mistake.

Post it up.

I don't see why Nintendo is even doing it in the first place. Just keep it playing their proprietary discs.

I actually wouldn't mind an external HD-DVD player for it. That would be cool. But just regular DVD functionality shouldn't be this high on the priority list.

well it's just like the GameCube. The Panasonic Cube and the normal Cube.

So far from what I'm understanding, this will be a Japan-only situation. If so, thank god, because if that was over here in North America it would be confusing to the consumers.

yeah... another article released is stating that the DVD console might be Japan only.

but still... Why not an HD DVD add-on? They were considering a DVD add-on... why not HD-DVD? I think it could happen... or maybe I am wrong? Maybe the System couldn't do that?

Good question. Idk...but Nintendo can get away with this. I mean, they don't have a bad rep with alot of people. Plus, the initial system is only $250. I hope they'll jus have an add-on or something.
