Has anyone played Shadow hearts 1 or 2?

Im playing 2 at the moment - Shadow hearts: Convenant, ive completed it and unlocked all fusions and ultimate weapons eg. Dark Seraphim, Neo Amon, Biker jacket etc etc and I feel its one of the best RPG's ive played. It beats final fantasy hands down.
 
I heard so much bad stuff about the first one that I haven't bothered with the second. Please prove me wrong when I say the second are as bad as the first one? ;)
 
shadow hearts 2 is good. i like the unique gameplay with the judgment ring. i never play shadow hearts 1. was shadow hearts good too ?
