Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - 1 hour impressions

I've played SMT: N for about an hour so far since I got it.

The art direction is fantastic. I love the cel-shading and the darker look. It makes the game feel like a noir anime.

The storyline is already intruiging, even just one hour into it.

The battling is fun. They are random and turn-based, with the twist that if you or the enemy performs well during one turn then they get another turn right away, so you have to work at knowing monster's disadvantages to get the advantage in a battle. You can also recruit the monsters instead of fighting them. There have been a lot of comparisons to Pokemon, and it is kind of like that, except a lot darker.

There's no voice-acting, but there probably wasn't room considering that the game has six endings, so I don't mind. It's actually kind of cool.

That's all I have so far, but I will definitely post more impressions once I get farther into the game.

I have heard like next to nothing about this game, and it slipped under my radar. Tonight a friend of mine was telling me how awesome it was and that its apocalyptic and demonic, he even mentioned it made refrences to certain demons and Crowley.

Tell me more about this game Mai..as you obviously have played it.

The religious aspect is really deep. It's hard to even describe. Basically the game starts with the end of the world, and you have to rebuild it. It has six different endings depending on how you go about it.

To be honest I haven't gone back to it yet so I can't go into a lot of detail from personal experience. But for what it's worth, it's a really awesome game even just one hour in. I just have a really short attention span for video games, even the good ones. :lol

But here's a post we made back when the game was first announced.

Yeah I found that after I posted here hehe

I also read alot about it on different sites...this will be the next game I buy for sure...I cannot believe it slipped under my radar..but then again I didn't have a PS2 when it came out.

One other question though...I never see any reviewers mention the music..yet I know there is a limited ed that comes with the soundtrack CD....how is the music Mai? Is it worth getting the lmt ed w/soundtrack cd?

Well I went to town to buy this game and couldn't find it anywhere :?

I'm gonna go to "the big city" tommorrow and hopefully EB will have it :lol

I got it....

Jeez its a great game...I played it about 5 hours so far..I'm level 19 right now...great freaking storyline..I love the whole apocalyptic thing. The music is very cool most of the time..sometimes a little too hair-metal...but for the most part good dark gothic sounds. The graphics are pretty darn sweet too..I'm usually not much of a fan of the cell shaded graphics..but the way it looks in this game is just too cool.

The game is pretty hard at this point..started easy..but I'm stuck on this darned demon boss right now..guess I need to level up some more, or find a better fusion of demons to use.

Anyways..great freaking game...

Yeah, I finally listened to the soundtrack. It's pretty nice. It reminds me of something I'd hear while watching a vampire movie or something. :)

So now I'm level 35 and I have The Baphomet in my party of demons! How cool is that?

This game is the first game in a loooong time I have enjoyed this much..first thing I do when I wake up is want to play it! Thats addictive stuff there hehe.

I hope it gets a EUR release so you can check it out Retro ;)

Ackula, are you going to get Digital Devil Saga? Although not directly related to SMT: N, it's by the same people and has the same graphical style. I think the battle system is a little different.

Yeah more than likely..after I beat this one. Digital Devil Saga was actually the name of the first Shin Megami on NES or MSX one I think...not 100% sure. There are dozens of releases of these games in Japan..I didn't know that till I started looking into it. I played one of the SNES ones briefly today on..ehh my PC ::) It was actually very cool as well.

I can't wait till I get a day off work to get back into SMT: Nocturne..its such a great game..did you ever finish it Mai?

I have to anounce that Shin Megami Tensei has now become my favorite RPG on any console. I must recommend that everyone play through this game, its THAT good.
