Some good RPG's for Gamecube

"Are you listening...?" -Emery
Hey,
I never really attempted to play any RPG's besides the Sims, which isn't really the type I intend to try. I'm talking something more along the lines of Final Fantasy. I would like to try some, but I'm only willing to buy if it's for Gamecube at this point. I know alot of you here are addicted to RPG's, and I want to discover why. Does anyone have any suggestions? There's just too many to choose from out there, and I know nothing about what makes a good Role Playing Game.

There's a few different types of RPG's. There's turn-based, where you smack the enemy, they smack you, you smack them, etc. There's also adventure/action/forgetwhatit'scalled RPG's, in which you have real-time battles. I don't own a 'Cube, but I know that there's Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and Tales of Symphonia that every 'Cube-owner loves. Rent one and find out if you like it.

For the Gamecube, the top rpgs are Tales of Symphonia and Skies of Arcadia Legends. I would definitely recommend Tales, for sure. I know that of the two of us here (me and Nova) who own it, Nova liked it so much he's already beaten it 4 times, and I like it so much I'm on my second time through.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is more of an action-rpg and it's not a good game to judge the genre by if you have never played an rpg before.

Plus you need to win the lottery and make friends with dozens of Japanese school children to be able to play it. :D

Ok i'm just joking (kind of...) but in otherwords, you need friends that have GBA's and you need to have your own GBA in order to play this game to it's potential. But as stated anyway, it's not a proper RPG.

So, define "action-rpg." I don't understand that. Is it third-person action? I saw some Final Fantasy stuff where there were people running around everywhere like madmen with swords. How the heck do you play one of those? I'm guessing you run around and attack people in a civilized manner.

The FF games for PS2/1 usually have (with the exception of FFVIII) the main character as the only one that moves around on the map/world/etc. screens. There are random battles, so the screen will be sucked into darkness, it'll give a small introduction showing the monster, the monster will scream at you, and then the battle ensues. All of your non-KO'ed characters are able to fight unless the wonderful storylines don't permit that. Each character has a bar that goes slowly up, and when it gets full, you can take that character's turn. You can either attack, use magic, use an item, skill, etc. Eventually, when you and the monster take your turns and the monster dies, you gain experience points (which will give you higher levels, stronger characters, etc.) and money. You are then placed back where you previously were on the map/world/etc. to continue doing what you were until the next battle. Those are turn-based RPG's.
Action-RPG's are slightly different. With action-RPG's you have a storyline that you follow again, but this time you see the monsters there and you battle with them in real-time, which means basically as fast as you can hit the attack button on the controller is as fast as you attack them. There's a few other differences, but that's the main one.

As for your "Is it third-person action?" question, almost all RPG's are third-person. The only one I can think of that's not third person is Morrowind (Xbox, PC) and you can actually change that to third-person anyway.

Hope I answered all the questions above.

Okay, I get it now. I once played an old Sega one called "Shining Force" which was pretty much what you said. But without the Real Time and stuff. I never got through it though, because my stupid computer died. The view was third-person, but it was directly above the players, so that you just see the top of their gigantic heads, and their little arms swinging out in front of them. It was sort of like playing chess. I hope the game makers have had an upgrade since then...

When I had my Dreamcast, I heard of a game called "Shenmue." It was supposed to be pretty detailed. Did any of you play it?

Wow! Thanks for the link. That's a really great site. I watched the trailer for The Return of the King, and I liked what I saw! I'm not a big anime fan, so Tales of Symphonia didn't really appeal to me. I looked at the trailer for Crystal Chronicles, and It looked okay. But reviewers say that you'd better have some friends to play it with. Did any of you play the Lord of the Rings games before? It looked cool, but that can be deceiving when it comes to games.

Return of the King is an action-rpg, with the emphasis on action. The rpg part of it is really just from leveling up. When you level up you can choose new moves and stuff for your character. If you've ever played Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (XBOX, PS2, GC), Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2 (PS2, XBOX), or Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes (XBOX), it's quite similar in style to those kind of games, which are also labeled as action-rpgs.

You know what? After all this time... Still haven't! :-\ I'm pretty much set on getting Return of the King though. Looks like alot of fun. Probably just get it around Christmas.

Baten Kaitos is also coming out for the Cube. You might want to look into that too. Turn-based, but works differently.

I looked at Crystal Chronicles, and Skies of Arcadia, but they didn't really appeal to me. I'm not really an anime fan. One thing's for sure though... Eternal Darkness looks good...
