Reason for no BC in Slim

John Koller of SCEE says:

"Now that we're at a point where we're three years into the lifecycle of the PS3", he told us earlier today, "there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think — and noticed this from our research — that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]".

"And it's not just like 50 or 60 percent. It's well into the 80 or 90 percentile range who are purchasing it for PS3 [games]. We do know that there are next gen consumers wanting to come over the the PS3. Most of those are consumers who have not utilized their PS2 for a little while and they're ready to jump into the PlayStation 3."

Yeah, obviously people are buying PS3's for PS3 games, but that doesn't mean we don't want backwards compatibility. I have a limited number of TV's to play on in my house (my Wii and PS2 share one input) so backwards compatibility is a big thing for me. I could never bring myself to throw out my PS2, but, at the very least, I wouldn't have to switch between my Wii, PS2, AND PS3 (not that I have one yet XD). It really isn't that expensive to put in too so I don't see what Sony's problem is.

If you've been furiously mashing the refresh key on your Joystiq machine (also known as a computer), waiting for Sony to finally announce that the PS3 Slim will reintroduce PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility, we've got some sad news for you. Forget that silly patent that filled you with base, vile hope. The dream is dead.

Speaking to Ars Technica, Sony's John Koller has made it quite clear that backwards compatibility will never, ever, ever be coming back to the PS3. "It's not coming back, so let me put that on the table," said Koller, quite simply. He added that, "It's not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing," saying that most consumers are purchasing the console for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies.

So, to reiterate, no more backwards compatibility from now until the world moves on. And probably not after that, either.

Yes, the patent that talks about the Emulation software that Sony put a patent on...has been destroyed :(
