Soul Calibur 2 - Gamecube revisited

That is a confusing bit, what with Soul Calibur II on Gamecube selling more (at least for the first long period of time, fairly sure it's still the best seller on Cube) units than X Box or PS2... you would think Namco would continue to publish on the system with more sales - that tends to be the ideology in general with companies like that - why the difference now, eh Namco?

that would be because.... Sony bought the exclusive rights.

Now, this is not so wrong... it just sucks in some ways.

They've done it before with other titles.. supposively Grand Theft Auto was one of them.  We were supposed to see that on the N64 (check the lost titles N64 thread).  That was never a reason for it not coming to the N64... BUT early on in the Ps2 life... there was a news article that Sony had the chance to buy GTA as an exclusive title... I think they did for awhile, but stopped doing that and now GTA is on the Xbox as well.... which you would think they would hit up the Gamecube as well... but hey, that's their decision.

[rant]
Another stupid move by game pulbishers (IE Capcom).... they bring an outdated series to a new console (Resident evil and the cube)... make 1 pretty good remake (which people buy because it's a remake.. but it's still RE1 in full), make 1 lack luster new game (RE0), and then call the Gamecube unfit to house their titles.  They also complained that Resident Evil 4 didn't sell enough (sold over 500,000 copies in the first month or couple months, the numbers are still going up).... and then used that excuse to port it to the Ps2 and add new features that weren't in the Gamecube.  This is ok and all... but I don't think the Ps2 version sold near as many as the gamecube's...  I can't find specific numbers.  If ANYONE has them, please post them in a new topic.    I believe over 3 million total copies have been sold of RE4 though.....    Well... even with all those good figures, they are leaving Nintendo out.  I think Capcom are  a bunch of idiots.  WHO LEAVES OUT THEIR FANS?!  .... and who sacrifices sales like that?  They should know by now... NEW/ ORIGINAL / GOOOOOD ( stress good..) makes sales.   I don't understand what Capcom's problem is.  Maybe the 2 companies just don't get along.. but for sales sake... who cares :lol    They ported games (Killer 7, RE4) to the Ps2 because their shareholders wanted it... but I can't see their share holders backing down from more sales on the Nintendo side.  I mean, they are releasing DS games....

SO.. Nintendo doesn't get resident Evil 5... but Xbox does.   :huh  Capcom really needs to start making sense.  In looking at December 10 top lists.... Resident Evil 4 was still outselling the other version.

This is not a Nintendo fan rant... I just don't understand Capcom... HELL RELEASE ALL YOUR TITLES TO ALL CONSOLES.

well.. that would be Namco and that's not what I heard... but that may have been the "official" story that came out.. who knows.

BUT... it doesn't make sense for the GAme to be Ps2 only when it outsold the PS2 in Soul Calibur 2.. and The Xbox sales figures were pretty high as well. Over all 3 systems they sold a ton. The cube was 1st by a decent margin, ps2 second, and the xbox was 3rd.

I can't imagine that they wouldn't make it multiplatform with good sales on every system. You'd think they would at least put it on the system that sold the most (most strategic move.. IMO).

Well, I can provide one possible explanation.

The reason why the GC version of SCII sold the best is obvious, because Link was a playable character in it. Nintendo's been pimpin out their mascots like crazy lately, with the desire to boost sales of games that might not sell so well on their own accord(DK Jungle Beat, Mario DDR, etc.). Perhaps Namco (thanks for correcting me BV) had to pay out some $$$ in order to use characters from other games in their game (I'm not sure if it would require licensing the characters or whatever, but I'm sure it would cost Namco something). For financial reasons special characters were not used this time around. So the obvious reason for not bringing SCIII to the GC would be due to the (somewhat justified) belief that Nintendo fans would take no interest in the game unless it had a Nintendo character in it.

If Namco, for whatever reason (probably financial), didn't want to port this game to other systems it would make sense to make it PS2 exclusive. With more PS2's being sold worldwide than Xboxes or GCes combined they would be reaching the widest audience they could whilst limiting their game to only one console. It makes sense to me, and is a lot less far fetched than some "sony conspiracy cover-up."

Ya, I remember Sony worked out a 5 year deal with Rockstar to have exclusive rights to the GTA franchise (PC being the exception). Nintendo's response was to snap up Capcom's RE for 5 years. Neither agreement lasted 5 years.

I thought GTA was a game that would not be "allowed" on the GC, after Miyamoto/Iwata (one of those guys) stated that "Mario will never beat up a hooker," or something to that affect. If not that then I just don't see an audience for that type of game on the console. It would be a waste of time/effort/money to port it over.

Do you really think Link sold most of those copies?  He may of helped... but it would have sold well regardless IMO.  Soul Calibur was finally breaking out onto new systems.... and honestly, it was going to sell well no matter what system it is on.

Soul Calibur 3 hasn't fared that well I believe.... but regardless. they should have ported it to the cube.

regardless of how many people Sony has... if you cut out the Xbox and Gamecube.. look at how many more potential buyers you lose.

I don't mean to sound like a dork when I say this, but I really do think Link sold most of those copies. I mean, I bought one because of it. :lol

Granted, I found out SCII was an incredible fighting game, but Link was what sparked my interest in a genre that I cared nothing for.

Regardless of that though, I do believe that Namco believes that to be the main reason why it sold so well on the Cube. At the very least it's a workable theory, and the best I can come up with. :-\

Ya, I'd like to know what it costs companies to port games over. I wonder if they really did the math on this one right, because they did gain a lot of SC fans on the Xbox and GC with SCII, I don't really get why they'd make SCIII exclusive to any platform...

they should have learned from Soul Calibur Exclusivity on the Dreamcast.

I can't imagine Namco foregoing a chance to sell AT LEAST 400,000 to 600,000+ more copies of the game (assuming it would have come out at the right time and sold decently well ... no guarantee that a game good or bad will be accepted... case in point: the 1st prince of persia for the cube / xbox / Ps2).

Personally... I like exclusive games to a console though... it would be stupid for every console to have the same games, you know?

oh well :lol
