Let's not make this a flamewar between "I love MGS!" and "I love MGS2!!", so keep this serious. Graphics and sound don't count, as a newer MGS will obviously have better looks and sound that the previous ones. MGS4 will make MGS3 look very outdated, so say the least. (but then again it's on PS3).
I have played all three and don't know what I feel about the third one.
For starters, I'm one of those who loved the first one and hated the second. This is mainly because I thought the characters in the first one were a lot better, the story more interesting and the gameplay had enough weirdness to be really enjoyable. (short version, a boss in the first one reads your gamepad to predict your every move. This means you can't beat the boss unless you use the other gamepad for that particullar fight.)
I like the story in the third one (although I haven't gotten far. I've only met that Ocelot guy. The characters are more like they are in the first one (again, I met Ocelot. Just like in the first game.) You play Snake again, although with a different name. That's a major improvement over the first one. And speaking of Majors, he shal be called... Tom. Major Tom, if you like.
(in case you don't know, David Bowie has a song called "Ground control to Major Tom"). That wasa funny.
On the other hand, I don't like the fact you don't have a radar. The first part of the game should be very easy, but the lack of radar makes it really hard. Sure you can wack all the guards (and they even run out of reinforcements), but this is a stealth game. Major Tom say over and over and over that you should not fight at all throughout the entire mission, and I know it is fully possible. But again, no radar, no way.
That said, it's a great game. I like it almost as much as the first one. What do you think?
