Talk about getting scared uh... "poop"less.

Nova

Boom-shacka-lacka
On my way home from work today, and I have to take the back roads to my house, as my job is a bit out of the way in the mountains (I work at a ski resort as a kids instructor).

Anyway, on my way home, I hit a turn a little too fast. Since another car was coming the turn (it's like a hill that spirals downwards), I hit the brakes. Sadly, our not-so-friendly element known as black ice struck my tires and caused me to skid and swerve behind this car (which I luckily passed) and miss another by maybe 200 feet, and off into a ditch (just missing a road sign by a foot) and stopping short of a tree (also by a foot).

So, in short, I narrowly missed hitting four objects at roughly 45-50 MPH.

No, I didn't soil myself, but I've never been so shaken up in my life. My car was fine, just lost one hubcap, and another punched out, but it didn't really sink in until I got home as to how bad the accident could have been.

I don't believe Tokyo Drift had black ice on their mountain roads.

Besides, F-zero's where it's at.

Winter driving sucks. No matter how cautious a driver you are, all it takes is a patch of black ice or a brave animal to make all that caution worthless. Glad to hear you came out ok.

Nice dodging, nova! That would suck! I agree... I lost my Mustang to a black ice incident. I drove that for 10 years... I wasn't going to give it up. Was in awesome condition.

Glad you weren't hurt.

Bv :hat

Dang Nova. That's scary stuff. In my state, if there's black ice on the roads, people get stupid. I think somewhere in the North Carolina license manual it says, "If black ice is present, smash the long pedal as hard as you can to get away from it."

In January, it snowed here. My first time ever driving through it. I slipped once because the snow covered the road and the shoulder and I couldn't see where the asphalt ended. I slipped again on black ice. What did I do?? Let off the gas. When I slowed enough to brake, I stopped. I then held the brakes and slammed the gas. Why?? It cleaned out my rear tires and melted the ice in order to regain traction.

What I would recommend is the next time you buy tires, look for tires with the most siping in the tread. This is really your only defense against black ice.

Your story kinda reminded me of some close calls with the deer around these parts. Only hit one with the van.

Yea, I know I'm supposed to let off the gas and pump the brakes, etc.

In all actuality though, it was better that I didn't get control back. It was on a two lane road, and as I said, another car was coming. Had I regained control, I probably would've smashed headfirst into it.

Wow, my entire neighborhood...even the roads (which haven't been plowed yet) have over 6 inches of snow on them at least. It was kind of difficult getting to work today. :lol

You couldn't even pull in our driveway at work, which is kinda bad considering it's McDonalds... We had about 6" at least too.
