This has been the second time I've moved in the passed 4 months. Because the previous four months were a kind of intermission I didn't bother setting up my computer and other things of that nature, so it's nice to have that stuff back up and running again.

However, the city and location of my new place is, well, less than desirable. I live right on the outskirts of what would be the "ghetto" of this city (a block over from me houses have bars in windows, discarded needles are commonplace, etc.) and being of the stature that I am (average height, but due to an overactive metabolism very light weight) I gotta say, these next few months should be interesting to say the least.

In any case, I just thought I'd let everyone know of my current situation, as I hate moving and am glad to have it over and done with. I also thought I'd mention my new residence in case I suddenly cease to come to these most excellent forums, as that will mean there is a good chance I got stabbed walking home from work. :lol

Despite the "lol" icon, I'm not really sure I'm joking, lol.
 
Haha, I've lived in a similar place. I'd say one step above ghetto, so not quite as bad. It was for about a year ago, though I lived with a few friends so I wasn't that concerned. Sort of. Actually, living with them made me a little more concerned in some ways (IE: sometimes door left open.. no! No! TV is visible from door! Computer! No, no, no! Bad roommates!).

Regardless, you live in Canada. Describe your ghetto climate to me. That is to say, what kind of people inhabit this place? Is it like the United States, different, or same?
 
I didn't know there were ghettos in Canada. I've lived in the ghetto my whole life, so I know what you mean. Bars on bedroom window, check. Dude standing on the street corner selling something besides hot dogs-check....you get the idea. I was thinking of moving to Canada one day. Is Canada really like that Micahel Moore movie, where people leave there doors unlocked all the time-I couldn't see that. Anyway, I think everything will be just fine, so nothing to worry about. ;D Seriously-answer the unlokced door thing.

What I saw of Canada had no ghetto either. The guys we stayed with called it the "bad part of town", but it looked greatly clean.

No matter what degree one attatches to this "ghetto", if you're uncomfortable with your surroundings, someone will notice. And there are two types of people that get killed in bad neighborhoods. The "new guy" and the "gang banger." So keep your guard up while maintaining some sort of calmness and you'll be okay.

All in all I hope this move is for the better in the long run.  :-\

Oh My GOD; have you ever lived in that type od setting? The only people that have been killed here are people that dis something first, not a 'new guy,' or gangbanger. The people in gangs around ehre are actually nice if you give them respect, but they don't kill you for the smallest things like you might see on tv or hear in music. killing is always the last resort. The last time someone was actually murdered around here was a few years ago, and he did some stuff that he deserved to get hurt.

Well, as I said, we are on the outskirts of the ghetto, not in it. As I like to describe it, if there were train tracks separating the clean side of the city from the dirty one, we would be on the tracks. I've never been to American ghettos, so I can't really say whether they are the same or different. From the Canadian ghettos I've seen, the type of people that walk up and down the street are most likely unemployed, greasy, and have quite a stench. Backpacks are adorned frequently, as are clothes from the 70's, and occasionaly baseball bats or tire irons are grasped firmly. Like I said before, there are bars in windows, dilapidated buildings, dirty streets, and pawn shops/liquor stores on every street corner. Gangs also are abundant in parks and streets after dark. The climate I'm currently in is borderline what I've just described. The pawn shops and such are one street over, and as such the smelly backpack wearing crowd are the minority on my street, but the majority one street over. I will also say this, knowing full well it is a bad stereoptype, the ghettos of Canada are generally made up mostly of natives. The statistics back me up on this so I'm not being racist, and certainly there are quite a few that live around me.

Per capita, I live in the city that is the crime capital of Canada, so I lock my door all the time. However, I came from a much smaller city where it was a rare occasion for me to close any door but my screen door. Night, day, whether I was home or out, I rarely closed the inside door, let alone lock it. Michael Moore was in downtown Toronto, and it does surprise me to hear that people there don't lock there doors, but we have a saying that I'm sure you've heard, "locks only keep the honest ones out." So it could be true that many people don't lock their doors, but then again, Mr. Moore only tried one or two in the movie, trying a couple thousand might give you a more accurate picture of how many Canadians lock their doors.

:lol Well, I'd be lieing if I said I was comfortable at all times, however I don't think I give off the "new guy" image, as much as I do the "little guy" image, which might be for better or worse. I don't think it will get me killed though... maybe mugged, but I'm also fairly smart about where I go, and when, and what I have on me, etc., so avoiding bad situations has been the best solution for me so far. I can handle myself alright so I expect I'll be just fine, but sometimes I do feel like "whitey" in the "hood."  :lol
 
Dude it sucks living by the Ghetto. in East St.louis there are murders all the time. all the houses have bars on the windows and if you go into a gas station to buy something you have to tell the person working what you want because everything is with the clerk behind the bullet proof glass.


its gotten so bad the drug dealers stand right on the corners with their guns right out in their hands. the cops are afraid to do anything about it.

i dont actually live their but im in the town next to it so the murders and drugs spill over to our town alot.
 
Well, I used to live in Tucson. Nasty in certain places. So nasty that late last year the Police department released a statement that if they go to a house, pull someone over, or otherwise come into contact with anyone brandishing a gun, they will shoot to kill. They are getting tred of the meth labs popping up and the murders that are the result of these activities. Even the citizens are getting involved. If your house is broken into, you have the right to shoot to kill.

That's a tough deal man. The only advice that I could give for that police force is get bigger guns. It seems like comonplace down here to see the police with assault rifles.
 
its common for the police to have assault riffles here too, the bad thing is that its common for the gang members to have them too.

Shoot them then. If they realize that the cops will shot them indescriminately, then they will think twice about doing anything illegal. Well, most of the time anyway...
 
the problem with that is there are more gang members than cops.

the police have recently been trying to bring in cops from all of the surronding cities to help them.

its a mess. but since i was born and raised here i dont have to deal with it too much cause i know all the places to avoid
 
From what I understand, that type of environment is practically unheard of in Canada. There are meth labs and stuff here, but you never really hear about anything that bad.
 
I live in a small town in Iowa ( I'm talkin like 400 people ) and everyone around here pretty much leaves their doors unlocked. But now things are starting to get worse around here, you wouldnt expect it, but there are drugs everywhere and gangs coming from neighboring cities to fight and stuff like that. So all this makes me wonder "Since this happens in a small town in Iowa then it would have to happen pretty much anywhere. right? :?
