I will start this post with a question, Why do most games on the PS3 and Xbox360 look so terrible on SD (Standard Definition, 480i)? I know of course its because of the resolution, but why do they look like old ps2 games in SD. Games like Fight Night Round 3 still look terrific on a SD display, hell, their isn't that much of a difference between playing it in SD comparaed to HD. On the other hand, games like Resistance: Fall of Man look like absolute garbage in SD. I don't have the answer to this question but i believe that it is all just a big scam in order to get the people, us, to beleive that we need an HD device, hell thats why i did it. I don't know, im just thinking off the top of my head. Your thoughts please.

You've already answered part of the your own question. Resolution. Also if you're using anything less than component cables you'll get a washed out picture as well. My friend has to use RF connectors still to play games. 
I brought over my Xbox 360 and it looked bad, but when I plug it into my TV which accepts components the game looks marvelous. It's a lot of factors actually. Plus it's not really a scam, next year the only signal you'll be getting is HD. So you either have to buy an HDTV or a converter box for your SDTV. The SD signal will be used for emergency services and possibly internet. So there's more to it than just to watch movies and and play games.

Next year will be the switch to a Digital Signal. Only the oldest of the old televisions will be unable to receive it. But it also can transmit HDTV signals at the same time. So a TV that has been purchased in the last 15-20 years will still be able to receive a signal. It just wont be the HDTV signal

The FCC recently extended the deadline for cable companies by 3 years, so they'll continue to support analog until 2012.
