Multiple readers across North America have emailed to inform us that the new, slightly smaller, AC adapter-less PlayStation 2 systems are hitting U.S. retail outlets this week

Code named: Model 90000 (lemme repeat that in L77T speek...OVER 90000!!!!)

Hm... I agree with some of those comments...

but I agree the most with "what's the point?" and "Why isn't this $100 yet?"

and I pose that question here... what is the point? And why aren't they dropping the system down to $100 or less?

Post it up.

Same reason the Wii isn't $150(Nintendo could still do a profit/flat even doing this). It still sells.

yeah, to them, its, "we can do something senseless and get paid for it."

Considering Sony, I'd say yes.

BV's right. Why isn't the PS2 at $99 yet? It's been out for over a decade almost and it's not even near that. The PS1 hit $99 when PS2 arrived.

@Creepin'. A PS2 that doesn't play PS1 games!? SAY WHAT!?

Actually, Japan has had this system for a while and I haven't heard anything like that. However, I'd love to find out if this is true or not.

You are correct Creepin :( the brand new 90001 models can reconize the disc, but it CANNOT play the game. This is utter doo-doo :( I popped in MegaMan X4, SoulBlade, and my beloved SILENT HILL. They will not play at all =( You can hear the background music, but it won't budge from there.

Weak! I was about to pick this up too. I was really hoping I was wrong. :(

Whaaat? Is Sony run by a team of monkeys? Actually no, I don't want to insult monkeys here.

It's bad enough to take backwards compatibility out of the PS3, now they are taking it out of the PS2 as well? :shame That's like spitting in the faces of everyone who owned a PS1 and then carried that success over the PS2. Honestly. If not for the PS2 being backwards compatible with the PS1's huge library of games, Sony wouldn't even be where they are now.

Could not agree more. It's like Sony expects you to do one of two things, either A} Get rid of all your old PS1 and PS2 games and just buy PS3 games, or B} Have 1 console for each format, totaling 3 consoles. Both choices are absurd. They simply can't be that oblivious to think people who buy their stuff *only* buy Sony stuff. I mean, most gamers struggle enough as it is trying to fit a 360, Wii, PS2, etc., in their entertainment center. I do not even own a PS1 anymore but I own and still play a lot of PS1 games. I am just dumbfounded as to how such horrible, horrible decisions are actually being implemented. Is there nobody left with even half a brain there???

Really? I've never even heard of anyone playing PS1 games on their PS2 until just recently..

Um... seriously? :lol I sold my PS1 so I could get a PS2, and have owned less than 10 different PS2 games all together. All I ever played on it was PS1 games.

one of the reasons my sister switched her 80GB to a 60GB was because some of the ps1 tomb raider games for ps1 didn't work with the 80GB, also i used to play Legend of Dragoon on the ps2 just because it felt just more cool XD.

but yes taking out the option of playing those games is the worst idea they could have come up with... i mean why get a new model ps2 if instead of adding new features they are just going to take features out.... seriously the people who thought about this obviously didn't care about their fans >_>

Okay, word of advice to everyone. STAY THE FREAK AWAY FROM THIS MODEL.

It couldn't even play "Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol. 1". An actual PS2 game....seriously...how does this happen?? A PS2, brand new, not able to play a PS2 game??

You're kidding, right? When the PS2 first released, it didn't have very many standout games. Most people, especially in Japan, bought PS2s because they played DVDs and they were cheaper than actual DVD players. In fact, the highest selling piece of software for almost the first six months of the PS2's life was not a game at all; it was a movie: The Matrix. While they waited for quality games to appear on the PS2, and when they weren't watching DVDs, I'm sure they went back to playing all the classics that the PS1 produced.

Metal Gear Solid
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Chrono Trigger
Legend of Dragoon
Tomb Raider
Resident Evil
Resident Evil Director's Cut
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 3
Resident Evil 2 Dual Shock Edition
Resident Evil Survivor
Xenogears

See where I am going with this? The PSone was a system with a lot of great games on it, and most of the fanbase upgraded to PS2s with backwards compatibility being a major factor. So when I say, it's like spitting on those fans, that's exactly what I'm talking about. Sony just said, "We don't care if you supported us in the past."

In other words, Sony pulled a Nintendo, who didn't do backwards compatibility on their consoles until the Wii came out.

oh yeah i also got into the MGS series because of the essential collection that i could play thanks to backwards compatible consoles

I also love how the PS2 can speed up load times and make the graphics sharper on a lot of PS1 games. Another nice feature that will be missed :( I hope the slim comes down to $99 soon so I can just snag one of them up. My system is old and there is still a ton of PS2 games I play and want to play.

And no I'm not kidding..lol. We're complaining because a NEW model that came out doesn't play PS1 games. While this will be a heart-ache for few, it's not nearly as big of a deal as it would have been if the first PS2 didn't play PS1 games. This isn't a slap in the face to their fans. Not every Sony fan has a PS1 or its games. I bought a PS2 because of the great games I heard that were coming out for it..sure the console release-day games weren't the greatest, but there were alot of games that people knew were coming out in the future for it.

And this is how I feel about Nintendo taking away the GBA slot in the new DS. It's not that big of a deal, but reason why alot of people made the upgrade is because of the backwards compatibility. You can't say they don't care about their fans though. The same way you can't say that about Sony because of a PS2 model. Now, people buy a DS so they can play DS games because they stand on their own. Well on their own. Same reason why most people are buying PS2's now. Because the PS2 games stand on their own.
