the new unofficial Resident Evil 4 thread

There's some new information on RE4 at IGN.
http://cube.ign.com/articles/568/568644p1.html

Some highlights:

In a recent interview with RE4 producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi, IGN Cube learned that Capcom fundamentally changed the way players will save their game. Players can now save their games as many times as they want, whenever they want, provided there is a typewriter nearby. No more collecting ink ribbons. Players will be able to locate save points using the in-game map, as typewriters are marked. And when you die, you can easily continue without having to backtrack as much as in times past. What's more, the game will automatically save your progress at the end of each level.

One of the most dramatic departures by far is the ability to purchase items from merchants. These merchants belong to the same village Leon encounters early in the game. For some undisclosed reason, these villager merchants will make deals with Leon "On the side" when other villagers aren't watching. They will sell items to Leon and buy items from him as well. Finding merchants will add another layer of depth to the game, as players will need to seek them out on their own accord. Not only that, but should any of these merchants die (for whatever reason, friendly fire included) they won't come back.

Just like in previous titles in the series, Leon will only be able to carry a limited number of items. Only this time, Capcom introduces a rather interesting twist to inventory management. Items will now take up space in relation to their size. So, players will need to choose whether they want to haul a small number of large items (such as artillery) or a greater number of small items (such as herbs.)

I can't wait for this game! :woot

I thought that collecting Ink Ribbons sometimes added to the challenge and I didn't have a problem with backtracking to save my game. It let you to plan more carefully...like "should I backtrack a long way and try not to get killed, or should I progress further into the game and risk getting killed to find a nearer save point?". Plus it made you use your saves more carefully. This way just sounds like it's gonna make things more comfortable for the player, which isn't what Resident Evil is about.

The same goes for the purchasing of items. Why would the enemy help make things easier for you? It should be about finding your own way to survive and using what ammunition you do have carefully.

Despite my rants, i'm still looking forward to it. Bring it on!

Since I have RE4 reserved, I picked up the free demo that you get when you reserve it at GameStop.

The demo disc has trailers for REmake, RE0, RE Code Veronica, RE2, RE3, and of course RE4. It also has a playable RE4 demo.

I've been avoiding RE4 media, so the first thing I watched was the trailer for it and the first words out of my mouth were "Man! That's tight!!" (except the words I said were a little more colorful) upon seeing footage of Leon with a gun other than a pistol.

Then I played the demo and got much farther than I did while playing at GameStop. I managed to reach the village, but they ganged up on me and killed me because I ran out of ammo and couldn't figure out how to use the hand grenade in time.

Resident Evil 4 kicks major *** and if you don't buy it come January 12th you are insane. :p

God... I want this game so bad. Everything about it seems amazing to me... I know this sounds crazy but the one thing I can not wait for is to have the whole villiage after my butt, while I franticly search for a way out. I've always loved being hunted in and out of games, it gives me a thrill of outsmarting things. And this looks to be surpreme.

I'm also very happy with the new save options, I cannot get out in words how much I hate that damn typewriter...

I completely agree with you Link. Locking myself in a house and waiting for them to make the next move is something I can't wait to experience.

I WATCHED someone play the demo for the game, the first 10 minets I guess. I saw a few things that really bothered me...

The controls seem akward still, I mean running into walls while trying to turn around akward.

There seem to be a lot of boxes in the game, these boxes hold items. To get the items you have to go to your invitory, equip your knife, smash the box, pick up the item, go back and re equip your gun. Woudn't have been easier just to leave the item there..

I seen a god damn typewriter!!

Not a lot of action going on..

OMG, how stupid am I? All this time I've been wasting ammo by shooting the boxes, and I could have used the knife! D'oh!!! That way I have ammo for killing bad guys!

Thanks, Link. That reminder is actually going to be helpful for me, I think.

The typewriter is used for saving, but unlike previous RE games, you don't need ribbon.

Ok, I finally found a GameStop that had an RE4 demo in stock, it took me three tries... so here are my thoughts on it.

Very Awsome so far. The controls arn't as bad as they looked, though they will still take a little time getting used to. The feel of the whole game is great so far, and I really want to find out why everyone is in such a hurry to stab me with a pitchfork. Even after a had quite a few people attack me, I walked right into a small little town thinking everything was ok because they were doing normal thingd like shoveling hay and tending the livestock... that is until one of them looked at me.

Being chased was as fun as I thought it was going to be. I walked into town, people get pissed, I ran. I ran right into someone else. I ran past him into a VERY small little shed thing, and of course was blocked odd so not knowing what else to do a aim my gun and take down the first two that rush in on me. Not enough. By the time a third person got in I made a run for it (Hearing a chainsaw in the background) I don't know where I'm running to off course, I just run. I run right into a dead end. I have to take out a couple more before I backtrack, and by the time I do there is a whole wall of people, looking like they want to eat me or something (No, not zombies at all...) I go to the first place I see. A small two story house seems great to me. I run in, throw something in front of the door hopeing to hold them off and look around. They are already at the freaking window, banging on it trying to get in. I have no idea if they are able to or not, but I'm not going to take chances so I run up and there is someone standing on a ladder looking right at me. I rush him and push the ladder down with the guy screaming (Yay) and notice a couple people standing outside the otherwindow. Again, I have no idea what to do, so I look around for anything. Lss than 5 seconds later I hear a window bust open and turn around in time to see a pick axe thrust into my heart.

Thus ended my Demo, so far.

Really, the game seems great and as soona s I'm done working I'm going to check it out some more. All of the other fears I had (Except those dumb as hell boxes) are gone and I'm picking this baby up on Jan. 12.

Woah, this game sounds intense. Looks like the decision to get rid of zombies was a good 'un.

Glad to know you don't need ink ribbons to save, that spoiled my enjoyment of the remake...

Woah, this game sounds intense.
Compared to the other REs, this is. I have like just about ever RE game I have played, but this is way diffrent, it gives you a new type of fear that I really have never felt in my life. Usally, RE deals with the "Jump Out and scare you" fear, and it worked very well. I was always afaid of going into a new room or turning around the corner.

With this new one, you don't get much of that. It deals with being hunted. As I've described many times before, your going to be fighting for your life like you never have before in this game. Wiether you be inside a house with crazy people all around it, wanting your blood, or running around with a crowd behind you yelling carrying pitch forks, hopeing to god you don't run into a dead end.

I want more...

The zombies were scary in a different way like when
they are reaching out to eat you or when they mutate
into Crimson heads. :o I hope the zombies make a return
in Resident Evil 5 which should take place 6 years before
RE4 because Claire & Chris Redfield said that they have to
destroy Umbrellra after Resident Evil Code Veronica X. :woot
RE5 should not have a number but a title "Resident Evil ????". :?
What ever name that Capcom puts. I hope that Claire Redfield
looks the same like in the CG movies because she was gorgeous!
in Code Veronica X. hehe ;)

9.8 from IGN, baby! Editor's Choice.

http://cube.ign.com/articles/577/577841p1.html

10 Presentation
Phenomenal. Outstanding. From the slick menus to the cinematic cut-scenes, the new play types and the buyable extras, this is Resident Evil at its best.

9.5 Graphics
Superb. Unequaled art. Technically in a league of its own. Gorgeous character models, environments, animation, lighting and texture effects. GameCube's prettiest title. Faked widescreen hurts.

9.0 Sound
Atmospheric and ambient. Heart-thumping sound effects and moody music, all in Dolby Pro Logic II.

9.5 Gameplay
The best Resident Evil game ever made. Truly intense. Lots of new compelling gameplay types. Excellent new targeting and action systems. Boss fights are incredible. Satisfying quest.

8.5 Lasting Appeal
At 20-plus hours, a meaty single-player adventure. And because the game tallies hit ratios and kills per area, there's records to be beaten. Plus, there are unlockables.

9.8 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

I finally watched Shaun of the Dead yesterday (great movie btw) and just watching the characters in it getting hunted down made me think of how much fun RE4 would be. At one part when they barricade themselves in a bar and realize they are surrounded I was just wondering how many more days till RE4 came out...

I wasn't interested in this game at all (I haven't even finished Code Veronica yet) until I saw the 9.8 rating IGN gave the game... I think I'll have to buy the game now. Just to see if it's as awesome as "they say."

I've never really played a RE4 game before but RE4 rocks! I think even if you haven't enjoyed RE4 games before, you'll enjoy this one. I mean, it just rocks. The gameplay is very solid. And you get used to the controls.

This game is sooooooooooooo freaking awesome. I'm going to change my icon back to RE4.
