The Slow demise of the GameBoy

MegaDrive20XX

Segatron Genesis... call me the wizard.
In an interview with Reuter's yesterday, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said there may not be a successor to the Game Boy Advance.

"I would have a second thought about using our resources on what would be the next generation of Game Boy Advance, considering the strong support DS is now enjoying," Iwata said. "The Japanese game market is now evolving around DS. We don't need to do something that will pour cold water on the situation."

The news is significant as the Game Boy is the longest-running game system ever. Launched in 1989, the Boy and its many iterations have sold over 120 million units.

At its E3 booth this year, Nintendo did not show any Game Boy or Gamecube games.

------------------------------------------------------------

I'm a bit surprised, and kinda not surprised that they would kill off their most successful system since the NES.

Yet one thing is for sure, Nintendo lied to the public by claiming the DS was a "3rd" pillar and would not harm the GBA market....

You're funny Nintendo...real hardy-har-har...

The DS is the successor to the Gameboy, why couldnt Nintendo just say it?

Now I can see why the value of classic B&W Gameboy games have shot up in rarity lately. Since ever-other new system of the GB, such as the Mirco and the DS, refuses to play GB games, but LOVES GBA games somehow...

Plus the Nintendo Wii having the lack of GB Emulation is a dead give-away.

Why ignore such great classics such as Zelda Link's Awakening? Super Mario Land 2? Metroid II: Return of Samus? Donkey Kong 94'? and many more?

As much as I hate to say this, Nintendo, you're a dummy and you are on notice!

Why bite the hand that fed you from 1989 to 2006?

You got a point about abandoning the GB. It's their bread and butter basically. But I still believe the DS is still only a segue into the next handheld. Honestly, in my opinion, there is only so much you can do with a stylus. They would have to evolve their handheld again once the DS runs dry. I don't see them making a successor to the DS.

Nintendo never said GameBoy was going away. In fact, they've said only the opposite.

Exactly creepin' and hiding the name is pretty much the only thing they're doing...Sartori, the GB isnt dying...it just got a name change

Maybe. Maybe not. Time will tell.

Well maybe time will tell, if he wasnt such a maybe not? Cuz I talked to Time last night and he was like "Dude, call me some other time, Karen is over here..and I think I'll get lucky" and I laughed and said "Maybe not...cuz I was with Karen last night so MAYBE you're not on your side! sucka!" and he was like "Dude, you totally burned me!" and we both laughed :) Cuz Time and me are like bro's....and his dad...like owns this dealership....totally...owns...like this car dealership dude!

I don't know I always thought that the DS was like the next step.....

Gameboy
Gameboy Pocket
Gameboy Color
Gameboy Advance
Gameboy Advance SP
Gameboy Advance Micro
Nintendo DS

If I missed anything please correct me and my apologies. But as I said I think the DS will now be the focus of their future in the handheld market. I would figure their next Handheld system will be more like the DS and less like the GBA.

I agree, I just wish Nintendo was honest about it, "Hi, we're Nintendo...and yes the DS is the succesor to the GameBoy"...thanks Nintendo, see how honesty can help? :) Now make me another game for me and the rest of my friends...

Lame...

The GBA is something that I enjoyed having since it supports the biggest game library of any system. The Playstation and PS2 have been the only other systems that really shared much in the way of large library by backwards compatability.

I don't like the DS. I haven't played the slim version yet, but the original is clunky and uncomfortable to play (in my opinion). Since I feel uncomfortable with the controls, I won't be buying one.

That stuff about the DS being a "third pillar that will not affect the GBA" was just hooey from the get-go.

Not lame....A natural progression.

Perhaps Nintendo truly intended to have a next gen Gameboy, but the DS has better than they expected.

So what you're really saying i s if we get everyone in the world to not buy a DS and throw away their current DS, we might have a chance at another gameoy system :drool

actually... I think you are all reading into this wrong and Sartori had a point.

THEY are not releasing a new Gameboy BECAUSE the DS sales are so hot. Lets face it.. the DS is a Gameboy... with a different name. IT's just as uncomfortable as the SP...a nd yes I find the SP uncomfortable... yet I love playing it.

If you read into the statement, it's more saying... Once the DS cools off in the future... they might release a New Game Boy. They want to see where the DS is taking off to.

Honestly, It is a smart move not to do too much at once. A new GBA could kill DS sales... and the GBA sales would probably be at or marginally better than the DS sales... why would they abandon something that's selling hot for something that would sell as hot? It wouldn't be a cost worthy move AT THIS POINT.

I am a little upset about this as well... as I was hoping for a new Gameboy with a larger screen and all..... but I think they will have something good to come in the future.
Give the DS a try..... I play my games on that now. IMO it's more comfortable than the SP.... which is why I rarely crack open the SP anymore.

Grindspine... give me a call... :lol

Bv :hat
