To keep or not to keep a PS2?!? That is the question!

Yes, if you don't consider doubling processing capabilities drastically moving forward. You don't need to reinvent the wheel to move forward. We can move forward drastically in flight without changing the basic engine structure (the basic jet engine hasn't had a drastic makeover in 50 years, and look how much flight has advanced in that time) of our planes, so, why can't the same principal be applied to gaming? Why can't something like Bioshock be considered a drastic move forward? Because you're using the same controls as other FPS's? Why must you change the hardware in order to move forward drastically?

Because it's more than just controls and pretty graphics. It's about all the other stuff you can't see, for instance physics and AI. Granted, the hardware in this day and age isn't being utilized to its full potential due to online gaming, but the point remains.

You don't have to drastically change anything, but if there is a new console coming out then I want it to be worth my money. Meaning be able to do things that the previous console couldn't before.

If you don't move forward with drastic changes every now and then and take chances, then you don't really know what you're capable of. We could be missing out on a lot of innovations if we remain stagnant. That goes for any field. Just because the jet engine itself hasn't had a drastic makeover, does not mean that other parts of the plane have remained the same. It's more than just the engine, it's the whole package.

Forgive me if this doesn't make sense. I'm kind of out of it today.

My post wasn't referring to new hardware like the 360 or PS3 which essentially work the same as their previous iterations. I was arguing that innovations and large leaps forward are just as possible on those consoles as on something like the Wii which takes a new approach to hardware. Having the same basic parts doesn't necessarily stifle innovation and I still think that there is a lot of potential in the approach we are currently taking to making hardware. Reinventing the wheel just isn't necessary for change and moving forward right now, at least not on the hardware side of things. The 360 and PS3 prove this.

According to my Sony rep:

"As of right now, none of the PS3s will have backwards compatibility any more. Going forward, we want to affiliate the PS3 with only PS3 games. Anyone who still wants to play PS2 games can keep their old PS2s, or buy one of the new ones."

:o
No way Sony is that stupid... Are you serious? The 1 VERY IMPORTANT factor that lead them to victory over Nintendo was backward compatibility.
Are you sure? (not to question you... but maybe the rep needs to be hit with a stick a few times to see if he/she really checked his/her sources :lol )

@ Mega... I know this is an old topic and all.... but if you have a 60 Gig Ps3, I would sell it. If you have an 80 Gig Ps3, I would keep it. the 60 Gigs had the actual PS2 chips... where as the 80 Gig emulated.

I haven't sold a system of mine yet... so if you are like me... then keep it. Otherwise, if the offer is right, sell it.

Yeah, dead serious about Sony being a complete jerk.

As for me, of course Im keeping the PS3. LittleBigPlanet is gonna rock.

@BV, this is almost verbatim from my Sony rep. She's a little ... overzealous ... but she is a very nice lady.

Yes, but eventually you will hit that ceiling and I think as far as the PS2 goes, it has already hit it. The overhead is gone and it's time to move on. To be honest I love the way that Sony handled the PS2. I've always wanted consoles to stay as long as possible until it has been completely maxed out (eg. the first NES) and that is what Sony has done.

You don't always have to try to reinvent the wheel, but there should always be someone out there that should try. It's how we learn what works and what doesn't.

So she is serious though... this is really going to happen?

Me too Creepin... The SNES and Neo Geo followed this as well. The Neo Geo was the longest system produced for I think... if anyone wishes to chime in to correct me, please do. Games were officially produced, sold, and bought for 10 + years. I LOVE when companies do this. I think more companies need to stick with their systems a lot longer... although it's hard to justify that when they bring out a new system.

It already has happened. The last PS3 with the capability for emulation of earlier system's titles was the MGS4 bundle 80GB. The unbundled 80GB on shelves right now can not play PS1 or PS2 games.

Yup yup and the upcoming 160GB Model in November (which comes with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune), cannot either.

*nods* We'll see where this gets 'em, they have already been having more trouble moving units this gen. Changing the system so many times, while offering different options to the point of confusion for the average consumer, let alone the seasoned gamer.

So true...we will see where it will get them...they know who to target hopefully.

for example:

The Lego Batman Bundle.

Explaining why we sell 60GB PS2 at $429 used, is a long tired speech I have to give at work to each customer. I should just bring a tape recorder to work and push "play" like I'm at a museum exhibit lol

God I feel like that all the time at work. People asking "How much is the XBOX 360?" and I have to give 3 answers, then explain what makes each one different and try to help them decide which one to get.

So true, as for me, I gotta explain 5 Xbox's to people....

"What's that one?" THe core unit...no hard drive...

This one? THe 20 GB model...

This one? The Halo 3 edition

This one? The 60GB Model.

This one? The Elite..
