Tyson Plant Drops Labor Day for Muslim Holiday

If they have a high number of employees that follow muslim traditions, it makes sense...

Note that it does not effect the other Tyson plants, just that specific one.

i think this is a bunch of bullshit! this is freaking AMERICA!!! NOT THE MIDDLE EAST!!! we celebrate AMERICAN holidays here. that is how it should be. this is just like the whole New York issue about the mosque! i am not trying to sound racist at all. i have nothing against Muslims but i feel that since we are in America... celebrate American holidays. this means that whatever country you live in.... celebrate the holidays that they honor there. so if you live in the middle east and this holiday comes up.......... take the day off and observe it. this is America, Labor Day, 4th of July, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, and Halloween are American holidays and all of these holidays with the exception of Thanksgiving because Canada celebrates it too but on a different day then that's what you celebrate.

But America is about being diverse and celebrating the freedom of religion. Are we supposed to keep all other nationalities and religions down because they aren't white or Christian? Sounds pretty arrogant, but whatever. It's your freedom to express your opinion.

Also, just in case, a pre-emptive warning to keep this civil. Thanks. :)

I 100% agree with this.

It is like my mom who works at a cosmetic company that is mainly ran by cubans and most of the workers there are cuban. They sometimes celebrate Cuban holidays because it is their heritage, their customs, and it is a private company.

When I came to America I didn't come with the idea that I would not be able to celebrate some of my heritage... I came with the Idea of expanding my horizons and going to a country that accepts all cultures, the melting pot of the world. True I do not expect people to follow my traditions but I would like them to at least respect them and let me celebrate them.

im not trying to say that Muslims cant practice their religion at all. i guess what i am saying is that, where i work, there are about 15 people that are Jewish, and the rest of us i dont know. there are a total of 45 of us per shift and this topic came up for Yam-kipor (sorry dont know the correct spelling) and it was denied. they said that they werent being racist and that they understand that a vast majority of the workers on my shift are Jewish, they felt that Labor Day, was more appropriate. thats why i feel the way i feel. and like i said... i have absolutely have nothing against Muslims, one of my classmates in my English 1190 is a Muslim and she wears the Haj-ab and shes a good friend of mine. we chill on campus and talk and do homework together and shes really cool. i am not a racist person AT ALL. i believe in freedom of religion but my point is, if my job wont do it for Jewish people, why should they do it for Muslims?

Because it's a case by case basis? Companies should be allowed to practice what they want if it's private. I understand that at your work place, a shift of Jewish workers wouldn't be enough to change an entire holiday. What I'm saying is why should we care what another private company decided to do?

By the way, I don't think you're racist. I see where you're coming from, but I think that if a private company wants to make it a recognized holiday then that's their choice. Unless we worked at that company I don't think we should tell them what to do.

Also, if this were to happen at my company, I wouldn't mind either. I mean, it's one holiday. We already celebrate Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving, etc. I have no problem having another religion having one holiday.

i see your point about the private company and i agree. i think that if the company as a whole, think its fine with me. i guess i didnt understand it was completely private and what not. so i apologize if that came across wrong.

You do realize there were people here before "Americans," right? Do you celebrate Native American holidays?

Also, 2 of the "holidays" (is Halloween a bona fide "holiday" in the states?) you listed existed before there even was such a thing as "America," so what exactly is your criteria for determining whether or not a holiday is American?

On top of all that, and with the exception of Halloween, the employees still celebrate every holiday you listed, and three more (New Year's, Martin Luther King Day, and their birthday). You're right though, I can barely tell where America ends and the Middle East begins... ::)

That sounds pretty socialist to me. Pretty soon you'll be demanding the freedom of assembly, and then you'll want unions, and health care, and before you know it you'll be living in CommunistLand! :D

In name, or in practice? Harvest festivals, a country's "birthday," honoring dead soldiers... these are all pretty standard as far as national holidays go.

Although I'm not sure what that's relevant to anyway?

i was just wondering, what was their reasoning behind switching the holiday days.... why not give both of them off :? :?

That's a good question but I believe because that entire location had a high number of Muslim employees. So there probably weren't as many non-Muslims.

i mean things such as fourth of July! no other country celebrates the holiday like the USA. i mean sure some countries have something similar but nothing like ours. and i mean in name mainly.

that is quite possible.... but i still dont see how they shouldnt honor both. they live here in the USA! they should be able to celebrate both, not trade one for the other. i feel that this unfair

The union voted for it. It passed with 80% in favor. Did you guys even read the article? :lol

If you mean in name only then would you be upset if people called the fourth of July Independence Day instead? Would it still be "American?" Which name makes it American? Would you care if some people called Labor Day eid al-fatr? Or if people simply called it "Labor Day" or "Independence Day" or any other name, would it matter how they celebrated that holiday?

They have 8 stat holidays, and they voted to change the date of 1. In many ways, the fact that a worker's union collectively bargained to choose when they could celebrate Labor Day, and what they could call it, is a celebration of everything Labor Day stands for. 7/8 other holidays of the year they are still observing "American" holidays, and if there are some people who passionately want to take off work on Labor Day they can opt out of the union.

This is really an un-news story.
