Videogame violence

Patiently passing your time in the grassland away
Okay, you're prob. thinking this is some type of thing against videogames with violence. Well, it's not-I just want to hear your thoughts on this topic. I, personally, love to roam around Los Santos and beat up hookers and shoot the cops....but that's just me!! Anyway, I think only people who have severe mental probs. actually get pushed to kill by games. Everyone else is fine.....Unless you live with someone that is crazy- ::D

Oh I hate this subject with a passion...but just cant help giving my opinion :lol

Anyway, I am so tired of politicians and parents alike lookin for the quick fix on bahaviors of people. They are just lazy and don't want to listen to the facts. They say "games are bad and make people kill". They also said "heavy metal music makes people wanna kill." Both claims have been proven false.

Only people who are mentally unstable will kill. Unforunately, these people with violent tendencies are naturally drawn to games like this, and with games getting more gruesome, its almost like giving them new ideas to toy with. And then when someone does go psycho, everyone suffers for it.

As for myself, I like a little gore and violence in games. I'm not all for going around shooting everyone for no reason, though I like a stand off with cops once in a while.

Also, with graphics getting more realistic and such, people are geting desensitized to violence and gore and all that. I am not sure whether this is a good or bad thing. If theres some kind of emergency, I think people will be better to react cuz they are desensitized (but movies do the same as well).

Anyway, I guess my opinion is I like violence, but it does get a bit rediculous sometimes when it is nothing but senseless violence (like Manhunt or GTA on occasion). Depending on the level of violence, it can be kind of a stress relief for me to let out frustrations in a fantasy world instead of snapping and hurting real people.

Oh, and one last thing, is thre another topic like this somewhere? I've writen about this before, but it might have been in another forum.

That's exactly what I was thinking...except smarter.....and longer.......and a bunch of stuff I didn't think about!! ;D

I've had to write more than once about this, as well as had long discussions with friends about it, so I would like to think I know someting or other about this.

Still, I was kinda hoping more people would have an opinion on this.

This was a very good discussion on the subject that we've had before.

My thoughts are adequately summed up hither:

I love reading Calvin and Hobbes.....Why is teh tv jumping in the air wildly, though? eh, nothing wrong with a little violence...............

I enjoy it. I don't see it as something that is absolutely necessary in video games though. Depends in what context the violence is displayed in. More parents need to do their jobs and read the labels on the games.

What makes me want to hurt people is the fact Pee Wee's Playhouse is on Adult Swim... saying violent video games make people violent is like saying racing games make people speed. Basically, the only people who actually think video games cause violence are the morons in DC and the soccer moms who vote them into office.

Thought I'd bump this thread up. I'm working on a research paper about video game violence. Post up your thought about it. I might include something about it in the paper. If I do, I'll let you know and post the paper to make sure nothing was misinterpreted.

@Spartan Evovled-I agree with you-Pee Wee's Playhouse sucks SOOO MUCH!!!

Video game violence isn't really an issue to me-I won't have a five year old child playing GTA; mostly because at that young of an age, everything in the world is an influence. But if I have a child who is mature enough to understand that there is a HUGE difference between reality and video games. The only people that take this stuff seriously are the people that spend 24-7 playing and worshipping these games. I think that the thing with Bully was taken way to far....politicians and critics saying it was a Columbine simulator way before they even played the game or knew anything about it. People just need to realize that video games shouldn't be taken seriously like that.

Could this problem simply stem from parents using video games as an alternative for expensive teen babysitters?

Sorry, I forgot about the link to the more developed topic above. Maybe the conversation could continue there.

And about the babysitter thing, I could see that. Lots of parents plant their kid in front of the TV to get a half hour break. Then they see that it works and keep putting them there and a few years later, the parents wonder why their kid just watches TV or plays games all the time.

It's the parents fault for not spending enough time with their children. Instead they want to go over to some protest/meeting to complain about some violent form of media. Instead of sitting down with their kids and discussing the issue like a smart person would, instead of jumping on a bandwagon of crazy soccermom's who are too lazy to care what's on the TV at the moment, so they dump this on the politicians. Whom, use this protest as an advantage to make themselves look good for the next elections, when in reality they could really care less about what little Billy is playing on his Playstation, but Mr. Politician is happy to have thousands of more votes because he is claiming now, that "I'm Against violence in the media too! Vote for me!" :)

Bottom line, is that nobody wants to talk person to person anymore. Relying on others to slove problems is not a great idea, because they will carry out the reslove in a whole different matter from what you want originally. You'll agree with them if the problem effects your household, but it can do alot more damage then you realize.

What causes a child to outburst in violent rage at school or near his friends or enemies? Peer pressure, not video games, but the basic teenage PEER PRESSURE that has been known for eons. Let's face it, kids are cruel. They go to school in fear of a bully always, either it be a high school jock or the leader of the cheerleader squad who thinks she's all that and has all the friends in the world. Not just males who are effected by this, but females as well. It's Alpha-male/female, "gorilla in the mist" kind of documentary if you think about it. The Alpha Male will pick on the weak to show who is stronger and make sure he stands his ground in the pack (His/her group of friends), however the weak will rise to power if pushed over the line, causing these outburst.

This ain't rocket science, it's common human nature, that "We don't take **** from no one!". People cannot handle stress, period. Teenagers, however, have an insane amount of hormones that could kill a man in his 50's instantly and those hormones control those emotions like a roller coaster from hell.

When Hillary Clinton said "Spiraling out of control" (Btw, remember what I said about Politicians taking advantage of the soccermoms? This is a PRIME example of who I can refer to) I think she forgot what it's like to be a teenager. Especially in this day and age, when Teenagers have more power/authority then a cop.

Let's look at what teenagers are can DO these days...Teens can divorce their parents, go to jail and trialed as an adult, can get knocked up at age 14, get married in some states, have sex with a teacher and the TEACHER goes to jail even after the teacher had HIS kid, Kids shooting up schools because they cannot take the ***holes at school anymore for treating them like garbage, then get two LIFE SENTENCES in prison for double murder. End up on Maury show, because they are beating the heck out of their parents, doing drugs, smoking crack, selling their bodies for sex...

Okay, Teenagers, need to be taken seriously, because they are walking time bombs and try SO hard to be adults, that yeah they do a fine job by FAR. That if you were to say, that everything I described in "What teens can do these days" and apply it to the age range of 25-35...you wouldn't think different. But if it's 14 to 18...it's bad bad bad!

Give me a break! The only difference imho between a teenager and an adult, is "Careers, College, and Home Insurance"...that's about it....Maturitiy is a joke to me, because everyone acts like a baby every now and again

I don't think that excessively violent games should be sold to children, as they are impressionable and it's proven that exposure to violence desensitizes them to it, which could cause problems.

A fully developed adult, however, does not have the same problem and they know what's going on, and should be fine with it. I think that's all. :)

One thing I like, is slapping a fine on stores who sell violent video games to minor without an adult. $500 fine I heard, I don't know if it has been enforced

To OP:

I don't think that many people commit violent acts after playing games, but a few do. And little kids do...

I don't like violence very much. I am a girl. But, anyway, if it is moderate and not too much blood ang guts, and you are killing for a good purpose, then it does not bother me.

If it is just senseless killing, then I find it unattractive.

Honestly, the pink female icon, the pink kirby avatar, and the name MRS....completely threw me off  :D

Wait....what's wrong with Kirby? :-[

Here it is-don't let children play violent games, make sure the stores checks the age, and explains the content-then when mommy complains that little Johnny shot the dog because of GTA; she can't sue-because she was explained clearly the rules and restrictions of the game. Some stores do this; but most don't. I know the (name witheld for legal prurposes) store I go to don't ask for I.D. or tell the parent what is in the game. I suggest that (name witheld for legal purposes) and other retail stores should put that in their manuals for employees. If an employee doesn't do what he's supposed to, he gets some type of punishment.(but not being fired, unless done consecutive times in a row.)
