Violent Video games cause aggressive behavior

I just think that its the parents issue to not let some six year old kid to play GTA, if they do, well, then let them see some gang stuff, so they can see reality.

Gang stuff is hardly reality in most cases. Come on, unless everyone lives in the ghetto, it's really not that common.

well for my personal experience....i used to play M games since i was 10 or less.... though i've never provoked a fight at school (i was attacked but that's another story)

I think Mortal Combat has made me a better person.

nobody messes withthe guy that pulls out other peoples hearts.

Plus, it's legal to kill someone if they yell "MORTAL KOMBAAAAT!"

Trust me, it was on a YouTube video or something. Maybe a comic. This guy yells it and another guy pulls out his heart, and the police come, but the guy says the now dead guy proclaimed "MORTAL KOMBAAAAT!", and the police let him go.

Gabe from Penny Arcade interviewed his Grandpa (who is a veteran of WWII) about his experiences, but also about his views on videogames based on WWII. Apparently Gabe sat down with him and they played through a few Call of Duty levels or something like that. Anyway, just thought it was sort of relevant to this discussion.

Q. What do you think about gamers playing video games based on World War II?

A. I haven’t really paid enough attention to the games themselves to be able to tell you truthfully, but I would think, if it’s just people shooting one another, I don’t think it’s a proper thing for young people to do. I think it sets a bad example for them, because they get into the mood of doing that, and that begins their lifestyle. And that’s not the lifestyle you want.

Q. When groups of gamers are playing these games together it is common for some of them to play as the enemy. They might play as Germans defending the beach at Normandy for example. What's your opinion of that?

A. Well, it ties back in to what I already said. I don’t think it’s an appropriate game. I think they can make games that will interest kids, that don’t have to include war. We don’t need to be killing each other in games. There’s other ways of strategizing and using the kind of skills that make those games popular.

Q. Is there anything you would like to say to gamers who are fans of these sorts of games?

A. If [the games] are what I think they are, I think [the gamers that play them] should stop and take a look at what you’re actually doing. Try to reason through and ask what’s the advantage of what you’re doing. What kind of an education is that giving you?

Q. Do you think they would have a different opinion if they’d been through an actual war?

A. Yes. Definitely.

I think the statement "We don’t need to be killing each other in games. There’s other ways of strategizing and using the kind of skills that make those games popular." is a rather potent one.

This is history repeating itself-remember the MK contraversy of the late 90's?

While everyone forgetting to blame parenting and not trying to fix up crappy neighborhoods.

videogames are just the newest thing, it used to be comix, movies, music, books, free thinking, democracy

WHat's bad about violence is that people watch so much of it they become desensitized to it.

But in each situation the violence is portrayed in a different way. Watching a car bombing take place on the news is to watch a tragic, sad, and regrettable act take place. Killing waves of oncoming soldiers in a videogame is glorifying and encouraging violent behavior.

but, its seen alot and repetition is a way to become desensitized

Graphic violence is evil and destructive-people become dessnsitized to that.

True, but I don't think videogames are being singled out just because they desensitize people, particularly the younger generation, to violence. I think they are singled out because many games have you actively participating in violent acts that, because it is a videogame, have no consequences.

You really can't compare seeing violence on the 6 o'clock news and playing a videogame that requires you to kill other players. It is important for us to be educated about the various acts of violence that go on around the world in order to come up with solutions on how to prevent these situations in the future. The knowledge gained by seeing what is going on in our own neighbourhood or in another part of the world is incredibly important to decision making that involves bettering those communities. The world can be a violent place, but ignoring that fact is not going to make it any less violent.

Videogames are the opposite. We can make a virtual world any kind of world we want, so if we don't want to live in a violent world, then why do we want to play in one? Violence in videogames can be easily avoided, unlike violence in real life.

So once again, I don't think the comparison stands. I agree that both violent videogames and violent news reels contribute to the desensitization of violence in a person. But avoiding the issues surrounding violent videogames, by pointing at violence in news media, is just as bad as avoiding the issues surrounding teenagers prone to aggressive behavior by pointing at violent videogames.

AS long as people realize the difference between fantasy and reality.
as far kids are concerned, there are ratings for a reason.

its the parents issue, not ours, and if you're a parent, take care of your brats
