Weekly Topic: The PSone

I decided to do the weekly topic to get it back to Sunday again. Plus I don't think anyone was picked were they?.

I've choosen the PSone console. This was one of my favourite consoles, for one, it was the first I ever played that used CD's instead of cartridges. This was a nice change once I got used to slower loading times. I remember first getting my PSone on my 11th birthday. It didn't start off with many games, but I was just wowed by the graphics, which at the time, looked stunning. And I wont forget to mention that this isthe console where I can play my favourite Final Fantasy games (I almost have all availible PSone FFs) with the exception of FFX.

I don't play a lot of PSone anymore, except for FF games, but it still goes down as one of my favourites overall. :)

The PS1 was cool, but at the time I was too much into Nintendo.

I'd played Crash Bandicoot a few times, that was fun...

Then Jedi Power Battles came out... (ADDICTING :K)

Anyways, I still play my PSone... ape escape is fun.

PSX....PS1...PSOne...whatever you wanna call it...(I still call it PSX....)

Finest games I've played on that system

CastleVania Chronicles
CastleVania SOTN
D
Resident Evil 1-2-3
Silent Hill
Lunar Silver Star Story Complete
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy Anthology (Im a big fan of FF5)
Capcom Vs. SNK Pro
Street Fighter Alpha 1 and 3
SF Collection Vol. 1 and 2
Tekken 2
Metal Slug X <--- pretty solid port
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid VR Missions <--- I love those missions...
Guilty Gear

yeah, that pretty much sums it up for me...PSX was a lovely piece of hardware and always fun to have around

The PSone was a great system for its time. It had a huge rpg library, filled with great titles like Tales of Destiny, FFVII, Lunar Silver Star Story Complete, etc. :D

I have to confess that I have never actually owned one though. All of my friends had N64s and I loved N64 games, so when it was finally my birthday and I got to pick a new console, it was the N64, and my first game was Ocarina of Time. ( :woot )

But I know with all of the great PSone games that I own now, if I had the PSone back in the day, I would have loved it. :)

I loved the PS1 personally. In my honest opinion it was built fairly well and had an awesome array of games that could appeal to anybody. My favorites were the string of 100+ hour RPG's; Legend of Dragoon, Final Fantasy 7,9 {didn't get in to ff8 much}, Dragon Warrior 7, etc. I also really dug the Resident evil series and the Parasite eve series. I still play alot of my PS1 games but I play them on my ps2 hehe.

Jedi Power Battles was one of the best Star Wars games to date.

The PS1 had some really good games, but I always thought the graphics were terrible. Everything always looked really low-res and compared the N64 every PS1 game just looked brutal.

too many games to list. at least 40-45
i loved the snes controller and the exact copy + two buttons. can't complain.
2 port wasn't really a problem for me back then. i eventually did get a multitap, but for the most part, 99% of my games were 2 player max anyways.
memory cards were cute, wish i knew of the mistake to come with that mega mem card and its eventual malfunction, but eh, got me to play all my games again.
lot of variety. had my Gran Turismo/Twisted Metal 2. plenty of fighters (namely tekken 2/3 ;-) ), rpg's galore. ff tactics & front mission 3 still my favorites. symphony of the night, brought justice to castlevania unlike those n64 debacles. resident evil, scared the crap out of me on multiple levels and gave way to annoying camera angles.
i know i'm missing a lot, but my mind is starting to give out with school in the am :-\

I loved PSX for the RPGs, Metal Gear, Castlevania SOTN, some 2D shooters and fighters..and thats about it.

I always thought..and still do think..Saturn was a better system overall though. The PSX was always inferior on 2D ports because of Sega's 1/4mb ram carts that greatly enhanced their 2D fighters and shooters. This was only available on Japan though, and thus hurt the Saturn stateside.

I never really was a fan of the terrible graphics on the PSX's 3D games though. I remember buying one on launch day, and going home to play Toshindon...and then regretting the money I paid for it :(

There was alot of good games on the system though, and the FF series and SOTN alone are reasons enough to own one.

But I'd take a Sega Saturn over a PSX anyday of the week.

really?
if you said dreamcast, i'd go with you, but saturn?
i don't think i could name a game for game type thing for saturn and come up against psx. it had quite a library of fun.
dude, battle arena toshindon was... heh :D not so great, but street fighter alpha couldn't have been horribly far behind. i still have that large dvd like box for it as well as toshindon. granted, i never cared for any toshindon ::)
DC gave me reason to buy for really on 2d fighters, project justice and virtua tennis :-/
i liked for a few more, but nothing on the extent of psx

Games on Saturn that are must owns in my opinion..and better than any other type game on PSX...

KOF 95 - 98
Metal Slug
Waku Waku 7
Real Bout
Real Bout Special
Real Bout 2
Samurai Spirits 3-4
Darius Gaiden
Parodius
Radiant Silvergun
Dungeons and Dragons Collection
Darius 2 LE
Strikers 1945 2
Cotton 2
Gaurdian Heroes
Sokyugerentai
Final Fight Revenge
Elan Dorce
Xmen Vs Street Fighter
Marvel Super Heroes
Street Fighter Alpha 1-3

Now when it came to 3D graphics and more modern innovative games like I said..PSX had the clear edge with games like Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy Series, ect

But for 2D shooters, platformers, and fighters...I stick with the Saturn. Take any of the games I listed and if they have a port on PSX..it is not up to par with the Saturn ports. For instance in Xmen vs Street Fighter you could not pick two different characters to tag battle with..the 2nd character was only used as a sort of striker..this was due to memory limitations on the PSX, however thanks to Sega's 1/4mb ram cart Saturn could pull it off..as well as Neo ports with minimal slowdown.

Now..the Dreamcast..thats another story all together..I still think it was better than PS2 during the years they competed..clearly now the PS2 has outshined the DC..but for when they were battling it out in the early days of the console war..I'd say DC had the upper edge.

there was nothing wrong with psx street fighter alpha from what i remember, nor 2 or 3 on psx :-/
yes, well, i'm not arguing on the vs series type things. that annoyed the crap out of me
psx had decent racing. crash team racing, while a clone of mario kart, was a really good clone. chocobo racing was really cool too. i played that for a lot of hours. also wipeout XL, Gran Turismo
legacy of kain, soul reaver were really cool games. i still enjoy killing innocents there
and there were platformers. crash was good in his hey day. still amusing games
i still like the early tony hawk games a lot more than the newer ones b/c i think the new stuff makes things too easy.
syphon filter series and the first two tomb raider games were great
it has the megaman series. i still think the cutscenes in megaman x4 are beautiful
ever play the game loaded or reloaded :D when two person, extremely fun
i just started playing twisted metal 2 a few days ago again. i can't count the hours on it i've put in
i don't know what a few of the games are there. sokyugerentai, cotton 2, parodius, elan dorce?
marvel super heroes was fine to play on the psx. it was just the marvel games that needed tagging.
personally i never really took to the kof games or real bout. i know they're quality, but the general area of competition around me is 3d/capcom fighters. when there is no one to play a fighter is worthless, so you can understand.
psx did get metal slug X, while not my favorite of the series, they weren't devoid of it
also did have kof, and kof: evolution
psx did boast dark stalkers, rival schools, samsho 1,3 and a fatal fury

and i'm gonna stop before i start ranting
