What are your fears for the next generation of consoles?

These are some of the things I'm worried about for next gen:

1.) That games will have less Japanese influence than this gen (I like Japanese games more than the Western ones)

2.) That the "thug 4 life" genre will stay popular. Bleh.

:lol Wow, that's my hope for this next-gen. Japanese games usually have silly plots and anime style graphics (which I hate with a passion, as I'm sure Mai already knows, lol).

What I am afraid of for the next gen is that:

1) The number of games will stifle due to the higher production values that will be needed on such high end systems, and concurrently, that the price of these games will skyrocket.

2) That Blu-Ray discs will catch on, be the next big thing, and necessitate me to update my DVD library to a Blu-Ray one.

* That Nintendo won't catch up to the other systems, but so far its looking good.

* System hacking through internet connections

* Graphics completely taking over and less innovation

I dont think you will have to. I think blu-ray dvd players will be able to play regular dvds.

1. PS2, Xbox, and Cube will be considered "Old SchooL" <--- over my dead body!

2. The tons of fanboys are already coming out and bashing Nintendo, Sony, or Mircosoft <--- too late

3. Nintendo not hanging in there

4. Someone finds out what Xbox 360 can really do and ends up being this universal game system that can connect to PSP, PS3, or other PC's/PC Devices. Plus people still modding Xboxs to play roms and emulators. <--- rumors are flying but nothing is concrete evidence. Yet anything is piossible

5. The cost of Nintendo games to be downloaded onto the Revolution will be a bit steep and we won't see the really get the good RPG's from the SNES due to 1st/3rd Party copyrights.

dont worry about nintendo

"Famitsu Weekly has conducted a next generation reader survey, to see which console system the readers are most interested.

Most Interested Next Generation Console
1. Nintendo Revolution - 42.2%
2. Sony PlayStation 3 - 39.8%
3. Microsoft Xbox 360 - 18.0%"

Speaking of price, everyone fears it, yet honestly people will go out on a limb regardless of the price by far

Well those numbers are for Japanese consumers, the US consumers will probably be more like "PS2-1st, Xbox 360-2nd, and Nintendo-3rd" Just like it is now

i know that America is different but the Nintendo revolution is winning some acclaim around the high school crowd and the young adults market

Yeah, that's another thing I'm afraid of. I don't want a generation full of Madden, GTA, or even Halo and Zelda simply because everyone is afraid that if they do something different, it won't sell.

I didn't necessarily mean that companies would cop out by rehashing tried and true franchises (though that would be bad) I more meant that companies would simply not be able to develop games, or not develop as many as they wanted, because more attention has to be focused on each individual game.

Bump.

Well, now that the 360 is out with the Revolution (I refuse to call it "Wii") and the PS3 soon to follow (I hope), have any opinions changed?

Personally, I'm afraid that Nintendo will get pushed out cuz they don't like the name (they can just call it the Revolution), or because of several other bad decisions Nintendo has made. Or that Nintendo will get pushed out cuz its different.

Also, that the PS3 will cost way too much (then again, maybe no one will buy it at that price and it will be a set back to Sony).

As someone said before, all the hacking and cheating with connections and whatnot.

I didn't necessarily mean that companies would cop out by rehashing tried and true franchises (though that would be bad) I more meant that companies would simply not be able to develop games, or not develop as many as they wanted, because more attention has to be focused on each individual game.

I'm not sure I fully understood what was said there, but from what I got out of it I will say this: I hope that companies do spend more time on games (A hint to EA). Several games like RE4 were pushed back by months and they turned out great. I'm not saying I want to wait 5 years for a new game to come out, but it would be nice if they didn't just pump them out as fast as they could.

But still, as it was said before, I don't want the price of games to skyrocket either. $50 is bad enough for me.

And also, I hope attention turns to something other than graphics for a while. As much as I like good graphics, I don't want it to consume the whole game.

I 100% completely agree. I really hope games don't want to be too realistic with the graphics and game play. For instance, some games are fun for how over the top they are in everything. I could totally see them ruin good FPS games by having you die in one or two shots and making it impossible to enjoy a good gunslinger.

I think thats where difficulty levels would come into play. Some people like the ultra-hard realism of dying from a fleck of shrapnel, while others like to simply blast their way threw things and blow stuff up for no reason.

My concern is that they focus so much on just graphics, that it becomes a really really short game and/or you have a hundred glitches. Just because it looks good doesn't mean the collision detection always work, yknow?

1.) Console viruses....   Yes, they could disable the system forever...

2.)  a CRAP LOAD of good graphic games that are mediocre
3.)  A Crap load of Bad graphic games that are mediocre or worse.
4.)  No Innovation

Bv :hat

I basically meant this:

I hope attention turns to something other than graphics for a while. As much as I like good graphics, I don't want it to consume the whole game.

If the new standard of graphics for games requires much longer development cycles, then that would be my fear for next gen games coming true. Although I hope some games do aspire to wow the audience with their graphics, and I hope that for most developers this is not their aim.

I've always wanted to play an ultra-realistic FPS. As long as not all games follow suit, I'd like to see a couple games like that. I've also always wanted to play a fighting game where the emphasis was on not getting hit. I mean, in a game like soul calibur II getting kicked can hurt more than getting stabbed. It would be fun to play a game where you'd be willing to take a punch if it meant avoiding the opponent's blade.

The generation after this one will be sentient beings that will revolt to what we've done to their predecessors...!!
