What does Wii stand for anyway?

Dumbest. Reasoning. For. A. Name. Ever.

When you really think about it, all console names sound silly.

I mean, at least Nintendo's trying to be creative.

Sony hasn't even bothered with a new name yet.

"I'm gonna go play my Playstation 9"

I don't think Wii is that creative...I think playstation is simple and to the point. Same with the xbox. They explain themselves. The Wii sounds like a pedophile's type of game system.

To it's credit, "we" is a word that comes up in regular conversation, and every single person here would hear that word come up in a regular conversation and think of Nintendo.

I still don't like it, but it is a rather creative name.

Well if that's the case, Playstation 4 should be called "Yu". You here it everyday. Whoa, there it is! I said it! Playstation would surely be praised as being original and creative if they used that name. :lol

Good lord I hope that doesn't happen. Nintendo's "Wii" Sony's "Yu" and Microsoft's "Uss" would definitely make any conversation about videogames incredibly confusing and incredibly stupid to listen to. Like talking about videogames in public didn't already make me feel enough like a supergeek...

I highly doubt it. Naming a console based on its relative size would be as dumb as naming it based on its relative shape, no rational company with any marketing sense would do that.

...

Oh, gamecube, forgot about that...

I can't think of any -awesome- system names. I liked calling the Nintendo 64 the "Enn Sixty Four", but even then the name was awfully generic.

Gamecube is sweet! Just listen to it! It sounds so awesome!

So does Sega Saturn. And the Genesis, Nomad.. Dreamcast.. Sega wins with system names for sure.

So I know there has been alot of jokes made about the wii and I know it's supposed to be more meaningful in Japanese but does anyone know what it stands for exactly?
It doesnt stand for anything,or mean anything in Japanese. It was changed to "WII",pronounced "we",so they could use it in naming the right handed controller the "WII-mote"This isnt a fact, but it makes a ton of sense,to me at least

"Wii got Nintendoooo! Hamburgers!" *kids dancing in the street*
