I've always found traditional turn based RPG's to be incredibly automated. Most of the time the battles just consist of pressing one button to select the standard "attack" until the battle is done. I'm told that such a monotonous activity can actually be deemed "strategic," but even if that is the case I fail to see the fun in it.
Ironically I'm sure someone here will mention FFXII as a ridiculously "automated" game because of the gambit system, but I found that game to be quite engaging and far more "strategic" than any previous FF title. It even required me to position my character within striking distance of the enemy which I planned on striking, all in real-time no less. One can imagine the added attention required to perform such a strike as opposed to simply telling my character to attack a specified enemy and then watching said character carry out said orders.
