personally.. I voted HD DVD.

I don't think Blu-ray will catch on as well.

maybe I am wrong... but won't you need special players for that? Can those players be compatible with both the HD DVD and BLu-ray formays?
OR will Blu-ray be able to read backwards to older DVD formats? IF not, I don't see how Blu-ray could break in well on the DVD format..... unless there is a revolution of consumers. I mean.... the DVD is simple and has killed off vhs... but I don't see Blu-ray offering much more of an advantage besides a larger capacity.

in fact, will movies change over to the new HD DVD? I don't really see a need for them to change over either.. maybe I am wrong though.

I voted HD-DVD because to me it just makes more sense. It's cheaper to manufacture, has more than enough room, and is way more practical than Blu-Ray.

Well either way they are new formats. So you still have to buy newer equipment to support those formats. I also say HD-DVD since it is going to be cheaper than Blu-ray. They both CAN be backwards compatible, it all depends on the manufacturer of the player to do it. But of course its going to cost more money.

I voted for either. I'm not picky. Besides, this is just like the VHS-Beta wars. I am sure both have their pros and cons, and I am sure that whatever I prefer, some manufacturer is going to tell me I am wrong.

Yeah. But that's only because VHS was forced upon the buying public by Sony, JVC, etc. Beta was actually better quality and from what I hear they didn't have problems with the tape being eaten like the VHS format did.

except um... didn't beta die off really fast?

Not really fast, and as a matter of fact its still being used by big tv networks since the quality of the tapes is a lot better than vhs. You can still buy a beta camera. Although its not cheap.

Actually Sony created the beta format. So they didnt force vhs.

I thought that HD DVD's could be read by regular DVD players?

I voted HD DVD, but that was mostly because I thought they were compatible with DVD players. I don't want to have to buy the next step in DVD technology already, nor do I want my DVD collections to become outdated just yet.

However, if you need an HD DVD player to play HD DVD's, then it doesn't matter. I'd almost have to go with Blu Ray if that was the case. May as well make the biggest leap possible now so in another 2 years we don't have "Super HD DVD's" that we'll all have to buy separate SUper HD DVD players for.

Ill check into that. Im not 100% positive that they are able to be played on regular players.

No HD-DVD can not be read by regular DVD player. I don't think you should worry about your DVD collection becoming outdated because both HD-DVD and Blu Ray players can play regular DVD's.

Plus it's not like these formats will become mainstream any time soon. I still think DVD's have awhile left. Because when you think about it no one bought a DVD until they became super cheap. I doubt any of these formats will become mainstream until late 2007 the earliest.
