Why the 360 can't win this generation...

Exactly the reason why I believe the Wii will not win this generation.
Screwing over 2% of all gamers isn't gonna hurt them all that much. Software sales might take a hit, but, as demonstrated by the 10 million Wii's already sold, casual gamers are enough to make the Wii sell like crazy.

2% is kind of a stretch.

If the Wii wins, will it win with the hardcore gamers or with the people who you say "wouldn't know a good game if it hit them in the face". To tell you the truth, even if it wins in sales...if those are the people it's targeting, would you really consider that a win?

Yes. The fact that the Wii would have sold so well would have been a huge win for Nintendo.

I wouldn't consider it the best console out there, but having great sales counts for something.

You can look at the wii as this...

Its the new thing and it has the flare...

Even if it gets sales who does it go to? A gamer or the person who wants to be cool kid at the moment or another type of person?

What happens when the Wii loses its flare?

Nintendo lost more by trying to be hardcore. For those of you who may be too young to remember, Nintendo started with the casual crowd. Do you know what NES is short for? Nintendo Entertainment System. Nintendo didn't want their system to be thought of as a toy, so they named it something that made it sound like the whole family would enjoy it. In fact in Japan the NES was called the Famicom, short for Family Computer. The NES was such a success because it didn't try to aim to a small crowd. Each successive system after the NES had less sales than the system before it. The SNES sold less than the NES, and the N64 sold less than the SNES, and I think the GC sold less than the N64. Why? Well because they starting banking on the hardcore gamers to buy their systems. And although hardcore gamers make it seem so (since they are more vocal), they really aren't the largest group out there. Casual gamers are. So Nintendo just went back to what got them to #1 in the beginning with the NES, and look: it's working for the Wii as well.

The only thing working for the Wii right now is that it's new and hip. Once that novelty wears off though, who knows.

@Samamir...That's like stating a video game is better than another one because of how many it sold. You just can't base it solely off of that.

So critical acclaim would factor in? I'm just wondering what else you would base it off. Obviously, how whatever person that buys it is important as well.

Last I checked, the PS3 is new and hip, too. Once that novelty wears off though, who knows.

Last I checked, things that were new and hip don't sell like the PS3 does, and there really isn't any novelty to it. There's no big gimmick they're using to get people to buy it, other than games, and games aren't new and hip. They've been around for 30 years. ;)

Plus, the NES was called Entertainment System because it was right after the crash, and they didn't want to say it was a video game system, and that really paid off.

Hmm...I'm not going to lie. That was a terrible response. I'm going to guess you didn't read my previous response. The gimmick is the Wii-mote's motion sensor capabilities. Yes, video games have been around for 30 years. Thank you for stating the obvious. :lol

Nintendo's got the best adverts. I know Microsoft invested a lot of money in advertising too, but the only 360 adverts I've seen lately are the Halo 3 ones with no gameplay in whatsoever.

It sure was enough for 5 million preorders...setting video game records all around the world. :)

I don't think advertising was a massive factor though. People just needed a little reminder is all.

they could have had a clip for ten seconds and a white background with black letters that said:

Halo 3

September 25

Look at what I quoted. I responding to fhq's post, saying the PS3 was new and hip. It is new, but it isn't really relying on a gimmick. Its relying on getting good games, and that's something that's sold consoles for years.

Don't call my response crap if you haven't even managed to figure out what I'm responding to.

Actually, I agree the Wii's a gimmick.

Wasn't the DS a gimmick? And then Trauma Center and Canvas Curse and all them showed up, and everyone shut up? You're really just calling it a gimmick 'cause developers are testing out different motion controls with party games. A real gimmick would be Sixaxis, since few games use it, it was an obvious copy of Nintendo, and it ruins games that force you to use it(Lair).

Enough said then. :)

@fhq....The DS doesn't have any competition though...haha so Idk what that argument's trying to prove. :lol

I will, however, say that I like the SIXAXIS controls better than the Wii-motes. It feels alot smoother and more natural to me.
