Ages 6-8: NES
8-10: SNES/Sega Gen
10-12: N64/PS1
12-14: PS2/GC/Xbox
15-16: 360/PS3
This brings up an interesting point--as video games have progressed, the limits of what can be graphically represented has been pushed. I mean, there have been shoot-em-ups since the Atari days, if not before. I don't know if the Commodor 64 or the Colecovision had shooters, but the Atari 2600 did. Graphic representations of violence have also increased in detail. Formerly, games would flash the dead characters and said characters would disappear. In many modern FPS games, a sense of realism is increased with ragdoll characters.
Games like Mortal Kombat that were controversial in the SNES and Sega Genesis days are rather mundane by today's standards.
That being said, my nephews and nieces could handle some SNES games, but not some of the PS2 or PC games that I play.
