The NPD released its sales figures, for December, in North America, as well as cumulative totals for all of 2007. To no one's great surprise, the big hardware winner of the year was the Nintendo DS, which 8.5 million units, with a ridiculously large 2.5 million of those coming in just December.

Second place was the Wii with a total of 6.29 million sold, 1.35 million coming in December.

Following Nintendo's two consoles was the 360, with 4.62 million, 1.26 million in December.

Sony's consoles lay at the bottom of the pile, with the PS2, PSP, and PS3 selling 3.97 million, 3.82 million, and 2.56 million, respectively.

Halo 3 was the software leader with 4.82 million copies sold.

Overall, the 2007 gaming market earned almost 18 billion dollars, a year-on-year sales increase of 43%. Wow, 2007 was one hell of a year for gaming.

I give most of the credit for the increase in sales for the gaming market in 2007 to the DS and Wii. Nintendo did a phenomenal job reaching the casual gamer, which turned in a huge profit for the game industry.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but the fact that Halo 3, a tried and true "hardcore" franchise, was the top selling game might be evidence against that theory. The big concern for Nintendo right now is that their console sales do not reflect their game sales. A lot of people who buy the Wii think that the Wii is itself the game, which in most cases is Wii sports. As a result the console has relatively low game sales despite it's unstoppable console sale momentum. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo can capitalize on a massive console base, or if tried and true games will continue to be the industry's main source of revenue.

As well, one wonders how successful each console's respective online service is doing. I know back in October Xbox Live had brought in over 120 million dollars on its own, I wonder how much the Christmas rush boosted it, and I also wonder how Nintendo's VC is faring. It would be interesting to find out how much of those 18 billion dollars were a result of electronic transactions, in which neither physical money nor physical goods were exchanged.

Top selling game? That would be Diamond and Pearl, with over 15 million copies. Halo 3 is still sitting around seven million, no? And Pokemon is quite the casual game on a very casual machine.

Diamond and Pearl were released back in April...2007. Unless you count the December Japanese release, in which case, you can cut off a million or two from that point until 2007.

They must not count it since it's not a stand alone. Still, only a few thousand sales would be lost if it was only one game.

If I may clear up the thing with Diamond, and Pearl, I think these are only American sales figures, and there are at least as many Pokemon fans in America, as Japan, and there are even more elsewhere. Also, they didn't even list Pearl up there, so, if you were to combine the worldwide sales figures of Diamond and Pearl, and compare them with Halo 3 (which primarily sells in North America), I get the feeling Diamond, and Pearl would have more copies sold.
