E3 Nintendo Press Conference

Well what did you expect? Nintendo to be normal and be like a Microsoft and have a billion shooters? Honestly, if shooters weren't a genre, Microsoft would be flat out of luck. Every big game I've seen from them is a shooter. Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, Halo 3, etc. You'd think they could be a little more original. Cherry, you really sound dumb right now. It's not about gamers exercising, it's about appealing to an even wider audience. People who can't afford or don't have the time to go to the gym can simply step on that plate and get their exercise in on the Wii, not go out and run in the heat or run on a treadmill in a gym. It's all about appeal. Did you not see the montages that played during the Nintendo conference? People everywhere are utilizing games like Brain Age, Big Brain Academy, Wii Sports, and other games in places you'd never think of such as retirement homes. You don't see elderly people playing 360 or PS3 because sports, shooters, and RPG's don't appeal to them. I agree with you on the fact that Wii fit is not the most exciting thing in the world and shouldn't have been their big thing this year. But they're thinking strategically about the competition. Instead of making 5 installments on one series, they are trying new things, and it works. That's one thing I will always respect about Nintendo, they take their chances. Mario Kart is going to be awesome because it's coming out next year. Yeah, they take a bit longer to release games but think about it. Would you rather have a crappy rushed game with crappy online? Or a totally awesome game that took its time and rocks. In my opinion, the second option is more reasonable. The Microsoft conference was just a bunch of numbers and statistics saying how much better they are than Nintendo and Sony. The Sony conference is starting soon, and I think the games for it look more promising than the 360. Microsoft disappointed me this year, it really did. Boo Microsoft.

Firstly, Mass Effect is an RPG but that's neither here nor there...

Secondly, you don't need a gym membership to go outside and go running.

Thirdly, sure Nintendo is trying to appeal to a broader market (and quite successfully, because a lot of people who own Wii's are casual gamers) but in doing so, they have left hardcore gamers behind. In the entire Nintendo press conference, I saw four games (Mario Kart, Mario Galaxy, MP 3, and SSBB) that look like they are trying to appeal to hardcore gamers, and following talking about every one of those games, Reggie said they would be making them accessible to anyone to pick and play. That means they'll end up striping down the game and making it less complex so that casual gamers can play it without being intimidated. Where's Nintendo's love for the hardcore gamers, the very people that got them to where they are now?

Finally, Nintendo did the exact same thing, except for twice as long. They showed 20 minutes worth of statistics before actually getting down to it, and in my humble opinion, both screwed up.

Okay, the Sony conference just started so I'm gonna go watch it...

Why would somebody want to go out and get hot and sweaty when they could get on the Wii in the cool air conditioning? As far the hardcore gaming thing, I've never seen Nintendo as a "hardcore" game company. But let's just go with what you said. It's all business. Nintendo is a business you know. They just made a sacrifice to appeal to millions of more people, rather than those hardcore guys that have been around since the 80's. Will it work? Probably. Do I think it's a good choice? Yes. I myself am not a hardcore gamer. I don't play for hours and hours on end. Maybe you do. I don't know and I don't care. This is a good move for people like me who just want to have a good time and not be all serious about everything. Also, this Sony conference is impressing me so far. Kudos, Sony.

Appealing to the hardcore gamers got them nowhere with the N64 and Gamecube. I think it's understandable that they decided to go after a different crowd. It's gotten them somewhere for once.

That doesn't really help much. I bought both of those system, the Gamecube a month after launch, and then Nintendo rewards my loyalty to them over the past few generations where they have been less than spectacular, by turning their back on me by making all of their games overly simplistic to make a bunch of new gamers happy. I think I have some right to be angry over this...

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption didn't look like it was overly simplistic. In fact it looked like she was having trouble with it.

I understand where everyone is coming from. But also, it's easy to be skeptical when you haven't played it. I think the real judgement comes when we actually get our hands on the games.

True. The thing that really worried me was that after almost every major game that was supposed to appeal to hardcore gamers, they talked about the fact that anyone could still pick them up and play them. I'm not really looking for something that is overly simplistic and the only way they can truly bring that "Pick up and play" dynamic is to simplify the gameplay. Maybe I'm overreacting to the whole situation, but it seems Nintendo is barely trying to appeal to hardcore gamers. They've put so much focus on casual gamers that they are forgetting to attend to the needs of the hardcore gamer...

I didn't get a chance to read all the posts in this thread but Nintendo severely disappointed me.

The Wii zapper?! Looks nasty. The shotgun prototype shell they had before looked much better. Resident Evil might not even be enough to persuade me to buy it.
Smash release date? Cool. Hopefully they reveal new characters over the months.
Metroid Prime? Lost interest. I was kind of excited when the Wii first came out now it's meh.
Mario Kart? Best news of the conference. Im extremely excited about this.

Overall, not Nintendo's best conference. Hopefully over time they reveal better things.

sorry mai, ill just post the image up :lol

I actually really like the way they designed the zapper (really bad name though...) and I think it really will change how shooters are played, at least to some extent...

Despite what I think of the looks, I might get ONLY if it makes playing Resident Evil fun.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention.

Wii Fit?! Miyamoto comes from Japan to announce the Wii Fit? Seriously, no. Yes Nintendo you sold a lot of Wii's now make more actual games for it. I can't believe Nintendo is disappointing me this bad. :(

It's a little disappointing to see what little they announced. However, there are a few important things to keep in mind.

1 - E3 is not over yet. They could still surprise us.

2 - Just because games weren't announced doesn't mean they aren't being made. They don't have all day to have a press conference, so they had to pick and choose what they showed. Maybe they didn't make the best decisions, but that doesn't mean they don't have anything else. They went with the more casual stuff because E3 is heavily covered and Wii Fit will get out to more people that way. Do you really think EGM or Game Informer or even Nintendo Power will cover it? Probably not. However, those publications, in addition to GameSpot, IGN, and 1Up will cover the games that hardcore gamers want to play. So even though we didn't get what we wanted from the press conference, it's out there somewhere.

Trust me, you aren't the only one. I mean, its almost as if Nintendo doesn't want to make real games so they just keep coming up with new gimmicky Wii games for casual gamers instead of getting real great games on the system.

@Mai: I sure hope what we want for the Wii is out there somewhere. :-\

I thought Microsoft and Nintendo both had lackluster conferences. Sony definitely had the best one. But they needed it more, so that's good for them. :)

Okay, so they /did/ show off a new character for Brawl-- Donkey Kong.
