I cannot believe this

I swear to god this is the last time I ever buy a PC game >:(

The first game I recently tried getting for my PC was Nexus, I highly graphically inducing game, the video card requiring around 128 MB or so.  I admit my mistake in buying it after finding out my computers card is only 32 MB, so I return it.

Just recently today, I bought Roller Coaster Tycoon 3.  It says on the side that I need:

32 MB or greater hardware transform & lighting capable video card, including the ATI Radeon or Geforce 2 or higher (64 MB Hardware T&L capable video card recommended)

Now I find out my 32 MB card doesn't work, because it's not one of these 2 brand name cards.  Do all games now require a card from these 2 companies now?  I find it utterly annoying that I need a BRAND NAME card to get 2 year old game to work. >:(

Thats how the PC market goes. They are the most popular cards so they start only supporting them. But if it says "including" then that should mean that other cards should work.

I just think it's complete BS that I need a name brand card to play the game. After a little research later I found that it doesn't support any of the SiS models, which my computer has.

I know it's weak, considering the rest of my computer isn't that bad. But the game clearly stated that it needed a minimum of a 32 MB card. Which I have.

The Windows Game Advisor is usually helpful in analyzing your computer and saying whether you can run a certain game or not.

Sorry man, a 32 meg card is pretty weak by today's standards. PC gaming > console gaming, but you gotta pay more $
1st....running games with the minimum requirements isn't all it is cracked up to be.  You don't get to feel the full game.   Personally, I won't buy a game until I can use it past min requirements.

actually... I had a 32 meg graphics card in my Pentium 2 266Mhz.....   back in '96-97 I believe. I spent $150-250 onthe card alone, but it made it so that I could play ANYTHING.

I only use ATI cards.  there are only 2-3 types of cards that are really fully supported by games (although you can get most to work).
If you have a PC for PC gaming... NEVER EVER skimp on the mobo, graphics cards, or ram.  Everything else can be had for pretty cheap.
That is just the way PC gaming is.  I built mine 3 years ago... and I can play Half-life at full graphics and it is smooth... online as well.  I spent about $2500 on the PC (building it), but like I said, I have had 3 years (so far) of perfect use, and I am sure I'll get another 2 AT LEAST.  It will become a full time storage computer in about 2 years.  I'll basically fill it with hard drives (maybe 4-8) ... over 1 tera of drives, and use it as a full storage machine :)

I HOPE to build me a new comp. next year... but if it is not in the bags, then I cannot... I'll make due.

Don't skimp on the power supply, CPU, or cooling as well. Not having the first or last in that list can destroy all the components in your computer.

true true... I guess I shouldn't have said "everything"

but... generally... those come cheaper (except CPU)
Good fans run around $4-8, Power Supply, you can find very nice ones with a good rating for around $100.

My computer had troubles running Doom 3 even at the lowest details, so I though about upgrading pretty much everything. (it's worth it, by the way.) :D But for some reason I tried to set the details to max, and you know what? Everything ran smooth. It seemed the CPU sent most of the graphics to my GeForce 4, so they helped each other run the game.

As for a 32MB card, you really should upgrade. 128MB should be a minimum these days, but you might want to get a 256MB card or higher. (mine's only 64MB, and I'll throw it away soon as I get Elder Scrolls 4).

:lol  yeah... the graphics hardware was then running the game.  That is pretty funny though :)

I am dying to build me a new comp. :lol I should just be happy with what I have.  some of the new hardware out there is really cool.

That's the problem though, I can't upgrade. I can barely play Warcraft 3 online anymor ebecause I can no longer host games, reason being because we have 2 firewalls, and my dad won't let me shut down the second one (much less figure out how to acsess it).

If my dad found out I grabbed a 128+ MB card and tried to install it, he'd flip out.

Anyway, the purchase wasn't a total loss. I'm taking an engineering class at my school where we use Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 to make a design for our own model coaster. The school just got a brand new computer lab up and running, LCD Screens, 3 GhZ processor, etc. all top of the line stuff. Since we use RCT 2, my teacher is letting me use RCT 3 on the computers, even though I'll get a bit of an unfair advantage (probably through extra track pieces and such).

As the PC gets better and better, the non-hardcorejunkies suffer majorly. Thankfully my best comp has some nice specs so I have no worries when playing RCT3 (which, really, is a fantastic game)...

All I can say is look into getting a better card.

actually.. it gets easier for non-hardcore junkies :) they are always making it easier for them. Look where we came from (Dos to Windows... of course there are other op systems as well, but I Am using those as an example). XP made everything a lot easier.

I would assume that trend will keep up :)

I dont know. I think the jump to 64 bit OS's will have a negative effect on current games. I dont know how, but I have a feeling.

Not when you find out you need to go out and pay $50-$200 for a new video card. Our computer probably hasn't been upgraded since XP came out. We get the new plug-ins, anti-virus software, etc. But our computer just gets bogged down by it. If my best friend got a Cable modem for his computer, he'd be all set.

right... that has me worried.. BUT they might have a built in emulation mode like XP, except improved and able to use XP and before (I am waiting for a "dos" emulation mode as well). I cannot get some old dos games to run right.

But what I meant is for the average computer user... things are becoming a lot easier.

Oh ok, I thought you meant hardcore gamers.
