I don't know if I should buy a new console

Ok, but are these Nintendo's Gamecube controllers, or are you buying Mad Catz or something?

6 or 7 hours a day...wow. That's a lot.

And what I find kind of funny....you're recommending XBOX, but you play the GC enough to consistently wear out the controllers. :D Isn't that in itself saying how great the GC is? ;)

Well, I think the controller issue can be attributed largely to SSB:M. My friend had to replace all 4 of his controllers laregly due to that game. However, my c-stick busted when I was looking around in the cockpit view in Rogue Leader. I wasn't putting any stress on it at all, and it just, snapped or something. My one joystick broke when I was playing Allied Assualt. I was pushing up to run forward and all of a sudden he just stopped running, and no matter how hard I pushed up he was restricted to a slow walk. My last controller had a busted joystick from playing Wind Waker. For some reason Link never looked like he was running as fast as he could in that game, so I kept pushing up harder, and then one day he was restricted to a slow walk, lol. As well the whole soft b-button thing, where the b button quit clicking, has happened on all my controllers, and happened to the A buttons on all of them too. I have never experienced any of these problems on any other controllers, and neither have my friends.

My point was just that the Xbox comes with a lot of extra features that are available on the GC at extra cost. Basically the GC is just a stripped down Xbox.

How long did it take you to write that post?

About half an hour I think, lol, but I was on a roll...

Your original statement was that there's not much else for the Gamecube, and I was simply making it clear how inaccurate that was.

Well, that's just an opinion clash thing. A lot of what I said was just redefining that those were my opnions and I didn't appreciate them being called wrong, so that's why I got a bit jumpy. As long as Mega understands that we have two opinions on opposite side of the spectrum, and that neither is right or wrong, then that's all I could ask.

edit: accidentally spelled "right" as "write". Stupid homonyms, or is it antonyms, maybe synonyms...

Point taken, but what about my point about the cost? No matter what accessories you buy or don't buy, the XBOX is still going to cost more in the long run than a Gamecube.
I'm not really sure where any of you are getting the idea that a Gamecube is somehow more expensive than an XBOX. Are you doing the same math that I am? You say controllers will add to the expense. Well. NEWSFLASH! You'd have to buy extra XBOX controllers too.   ::)

So in all reality, here's what you're looking at. We'll assume both systems are new.

Gamecube = $100
MC 1019 = $30 (if you get it from Wal-Mart)
$20 game = $20
3 extra controllers @ $20 each (Nintendo GC controller) = $60
Total = $210

XBOX = $150
$20 game = $20
3 extra controllers @ $20 each (Madcatz Controller...if you want the Microsoft XBOX controllers, those are $30 each and will add to the price) = $60
Total = $230
not to get off topic but, I love sports games but I hate how much memory they use. Madden 05 needs a whole memory card pretty much just to play a season or two.
yeah... that is a problem.

They should have figured out a way to tone that down  ::)

310 -350 blocks is rather ridiculous.

Lets just say this... I have 1 1019 card... and have 65 games on it... I have the rest on another 251 card.

Well, I don't have any sports games for my Gamecube, and my 2 memory cards are fine. I have one 251 memory card and one 59 memory card, and I haven't even had to use the 59 card yet, and I have a lot of save files.

So I think sports games are to blame, infact maybe EA games, as The Sims uses 60 blocks. :lol

No, I hate those second party ones. And he's right, it's mostly because SSMB.

Also, I never said that X-Box was better than the Gamecube.

The comments I keep seeing about controllers breaking..wtf are you doing with these controllers?

yeah.. I have only had 1 controller break on me EVER.

that was a TG16 controller because I accidentally stepped on the input going into the system... and it snapped right off :(

I did have 2 PC thrustmaster Joysticks die on ATF :lol $80 a pop :(
They just weren't made well.... but they were awesome when 1st playing with them!

i've never had a GC controller break, and the only reason i had a ps2 controller or two break is a lot of dropping on concrete floor.
i know gamepro or something had a whole controller war thing on which was better based on a lot of things

the argument kind of got a bit out of hand because you guys are pushing aside his original reasoning behind a system.
first, he generally doesn't have people around to play multiplayer, so that doesn't matter
second, he doesn't want to put out much money, so that takes a lot of actions out, (memory cards, eh, granted for ps2 and GC, you have to buy them, but unless it's a game like madden with creating teams or smackdown, they go for a while) and if he's money strapped, a first memory card will hold him for quite a while
this also takes out Xbox live since he has to pay a fee, plus probably buy some kind of kit (i could be wrong and feel free to correct me b/c i've only played on it a few times), and the ps2 adapter isn't a too much of a cost, but it's still a cost to take into consideration. and if he has to pay to get the others, he's probably not too concerned with online.
While I like the new MK online thing, you need a good broadband connection too, not just cable b/c it kicks you out if the other person is carrying you which is good, but annoys the crap out of me ~_~
third, controllers, well each comes with at least one, and that's all he'd have to worry about at first since he doesnt' plan on playing with many people and could a second one used or a third party since the other person would be using it anyway for cheap. each person has their opinion on which is best, i like my ps2 personally b/c of the dpad, but to each their own eh (no offense, but the stories on the breaking GC controllers seem farfetched with you putting such little stress and them breaking b/c of that. i do an excessive amount of gaming and put decent pressure on that c-stick moving it back and forth and i've never had any other friends have any break)
game wise, well, if he likes fighters, generally they all have a variety since most are multiplatformers and the only one i know that are exclusive is tekken to ps2 :-/ party games are kind of pointless to talk about, but he likes sonic so GC has that path. i do like the 20 dollar titles for ps2 and GC b/c i still think xbox is kinda crappy on that and i still think project gotham racing is crappy ~_~. he's a gamer coming from a generation long ago and GC is the console that has those classic character titles

I own, or have owned PS2, Xbox, GC, Saturn, Dreamcast, Sega CD/Genesis, Turbo Graffix 16, SNES, NES, 3DO, CD-I, Neo-Geo AES, Neo-Geo MVS, Neo-Geo CD, N64, Jaguar, Atari 2600/7800, PS1.....

And I have never..in the 20 years I have been gaming, broken a controller. And I play on average 48 hours a week on my consoles.

So again..just wtf are you guys doing to these controllers? I'm just curious here....seriously.
i agree much with this

and as much as i love ps2 and claim its superiority, the GC is the right choice for him if any

Mai, it's hard to respond to your comments about pricing because things are priced a lot differently in Canada. To the best of my memory: (This depends on where you get it from, most of these prices are accurate at a Canadian Wal-mart)

GC system w free game = $140
extra controllers = $25
cheap games = $30-40
average priced games = $60-70

memory cards
59 block = N/A
351 block = $30
1019 block = $40

Xbox system w free game = $228
extra controllers = $35
cheap games = $30-40 (same)
average priced games $60-70 (same)

As well, and partially in response to Moltar, right now buying an Xbox will give you the Xbox Live starter kit for free (headset and such) and will give you 2 months free online. So that does give you time to pony up the money if you really want to keep it. You would need to buy 3 extra controllers for the Xbox, but my original point was that you could play multiplayer online and thus not need to buy any extra controllers (but I still would).

The GC controllers, in my opinion, are made very cheaply. I was once strapped for cash as well and nothing angers me more than having to buy another controller just so I could continue playing the games I already owned. Especially when most buttons on the controller functioned except for the joystick. It was especially frustrating when it happened to my friend's controllers as well because I knew it wasn't a fluke thing that it happened to mine. And although some might say we are extra hard on our controllers (you'd probably be right, we get into our multiplayer games quite a bit) we still play PS1 games on the original controllers that came with the system no problem. We still also play Xbox games on the original controllers that came with the system. And I am still replacing GC controllers to this day. They might be cheaper in price, but they're cheaper in quality as well, IMO.

As for the memory card issue. I have one 59 block memory card that holds about 4 of the games I own. I have another that is specifically for Animal Crossing (though some things moved over to my last memory card), and I have one last one that is a 351 block memory card. I have my remaining 12 or so purchased games saved on there (only the bare minimums, no ghosts in MK:DD saved, no extras in F-zero, etc.) that includes no EA sports games whatsoever, and a few game rentals on there, and its maxed out. Every time I do rent a game I always have to delete something off. I considered getting a 1019 block memory card, but it's just way too expensive.

I used to think the GC was bargain compared to the Xbox and PS2, but very quickly I learned how fast memory cards and controllers added up. I currently have one barely functioning controller (for some games the joystick is too loose, but for works for the most part) 3 completely full memory cards, and I'm not going to invest more money into either of those areas. In hindsight price should not have been a factor in determining which system I bought (when I bought my GC it was $350 w tax compared to the Xbox which was $450 w tax) because paying a little more up front would have paid off in the long run.

Edit: fixed some prices on things, I was considerably off on a couple.

Yeah, I agree that the GC controllers are weakest, I think they're made from the same material as the N64 controllers were, only of course they're not as bulky.

Only controller i've ever broken was my a PS2 one, but that's because I threw that thing REALLY hard once.

the mem card thing you just have to think about, it's like 10 for extremely small, 59 or low 100 blocks or something, 20 for a 251 blocks, then 30 for the one over a 1000, the 1000 will cover for a while assuming you don't run pure mem card hogging games.
i could see how you could say the GC controllers are made cheaper, they did use the same dpad on the GBA as the normal GC controller >:(

Whoa you must have thrown it very hard. :o I do that once in a while but I never broke one before.
