I Hate Nintendo

Graphic wise you guys may have a point (though draw distances and character models have improved, IMO) but as far as the gameplay's concerned, I think you guys are way out to lunch.

See..OK. The gameplay remains pretty much the same really. Granted you can now drive bicycles, better planes, and parachute. The actual system for combat, aiming, driving, and missions have largly remained the same since GTA3. The addition of the "RPG style stat upgrades" doesn't really do alot for the gameplay imo. Granted you do get better at your skills...the only difference seems to be that in previous GTA's you started out with maxed out skills, and in this one you have to actually build them up. The swimming is I suppose a new gameplay feature..but its not really one that enhances the game so much as it is a logical inclusion that had somehow been forgotten in previous GTA's.

The addition of food in place of health icons doesn't really add anything..again..just more common sense things changed to what they should have always been. There are tons of mini-games..sure..but they are all terribly dull and would not be able to be marketed at all on their own.

Lets see..what else is new in the gameplay department...2 player co-op..which results in a random roaming fragfest. There was no actual goals or missions to be played in 2 player mode..only wandering around and shooting things till one of you died. There was the schools...that I will admit gave the game some much needed diversity and replayability, and yes..even enriched the gameplay to an extent.

I just don't think the series can really do anything it hasn't already done. Other than give us better graphics (hopefully!), more eyecandy, and mini-games. There just doesn't seem to be a whole lot of depth in the games to me honestly. Maybe I'm just odd or whatever..but GTA has just been a terrible blight on the face of gaming to me, I honestly cannot fathom what anyone outside of teenagers or pre-teens could get out of playing it other than a laugh or a shock.

I also find it very hard to take any game, movie, TV show, or whatever seriously when they use the word nigga in a serious way. :?

Hey I still really enjoy playing GTA games. Although I can only play them for breif periods now because I used to play GTA 3 so much, they're still enjoyable. But that's about it...

Rockstar are merely catering to what so many people out there want - that is to roam free in different places and settings and complete different missions (although the missions pretty much rehash themselves now). I guess you can't blame them too much for that.

I guess my answer to that is that is has evolved as much as a game can while still being part of that series. If you say that the GTA series hasn't evolved this generation of consoles, then I think you'd have to say that about nearly every series of games this generation.

As a matter of fact I believe that a series doesnt really evolve until it reaches the next generation of a console (of course there are a few exceptions).

I think maybe perhaps the reason why I like the GTA series, and why Dr. Ackula doesn't, is because of what Retro said. The reason why I love the GTA games is because I get to roam free and create my own fun. Once that starts to get boring, I start doing some of the missions, and get into the story and all that a bit more (the missions, admittedly, can get repetitive, but there are a whole lot to go through, and there are differences between them, though sometimes the differences are minor) . But the real reason I keep wanting to play the game is to just run around in the city and go nuts, and every GTA installment has given me a whole new set of things to play with in the all new environments.

Actually thats kinda close...the thing I don't like is that more emphasis is put on just screwing around in a big sandbox, and not enough on actual story. The storylines in all the GTA's have been very cliche and predictable to put it lightly. And with GTA SA the grand climax to the story was such a huge letdown..here I was thinking that there would ultimatly be a progression of the CJ character, that he would rise above the streets and become a better person and get out of the ghetto...you know..I thought Rockstar actually had some sort of inspirational story to tell that would excuse all the cliches on gangs and ghettos.....instead the climax and ending of the whole story is just the same guy that you started the game with killing the same cop that was his first opposition in the story. Just another cliche, nothing to further the games story or the character of CJ.

That was just LAME.

I never did get to see much of San Andreas' story, but I thought that GTA3's story was really cool. One of the fondest memories of gaming that I have was when the Mafia that you started out working for tried to betray you. It was one of those "but why would.... ohhhh" moments that happen at the climax of a mystery movie, but this time it actually involved me (well, a virtual me). The rest of the story I also thought provided adequate context for the mayhem that followed. But ya, in general, I just screw around in those games, so if you were playing it for the missions and the story, I could see why it just seems like an excessively violent, average game. Although I still think the vehicle physics are pretty dam good.
