Hmm.....perhaps the learning curve for this game isn't that short after all. I got the hang of combat pretty quickly. :-\
Hmm...what class are you playing as?

The game seemed pretty hard for me, as an Engineer.

You mean Noveria? Dunno, I just got Liara, and now I'm just exploring some uncharted planets.

Not at all. The story, the combat, it's all excellent. My only gripe is with the exploration. Most of the planets aren't particularly detailed, and the sidequests on them aren't very detailed either. It really falls flat, especially when you compare it to the main story.

Re: Mass Effect, first impressions.

I haven't played it, but I watched my friend play a lot of it, and it looks cool. I like how you can get points towards Renegade or Paragon depending on your answers. ^_^

I'll definitely pick up Mass Effect when I have gotten through my backlog of games.

Re: Mass Effect, first impressions.

i keep getting more and more interested in this game the more i find out about it, and read about it

the gameplay almost has gears of war-like qualities, but with more strategy and rpg elements

Re: Mass Effect, first impressions.

I finally beat th game this morning and have a ton to say. Not spoiler related either.

I have been anxiously awaiting this game since it was first announced and through the various interviews became intrigued in the way the game was going to turn out.
I have been let down. As one of the biggest fans of Bioware games, I expected that a few similarities to their other titles would be present, but I didn't expect them to give Kotor II a new face and call it "inspiration". The story is very compelling I'll give it that, but it lacks anything exciting and new. The combat was very easy to pick up and you can play the whole game without using any " Combat" or "biotic" skills at all. just like Kotor, each planet only gives you a toss of ragtag missions that leave you wondering where the thought was when creating them. I swear Citadel is the best part of the whole game depressingly. I started talking like the elcor just to entertain myself half the time. Every dungeon in the game is a "standarized" layout that, once experienced, is what you will look forward to through the whole game. The graphics are nice but nothing exceptional.
Now let's talk about my favorite aspect of any game. Variety. Bioware and promised us a slew of weapons with a ton of upgrades. Well, for me it seemed as if the weapons were more limiting than Halo 3(yeah, that bad) but that is if your expecting a lot from the game. Most characters have the same skill sets so you can effectively use any character for anything. I kept the same two the whole game without changing them, I was so uninterested in the development process that I never even leveled up the other characters past whatever I had last left them before setting and relying on the two in particular. As with Kotor I and II you can spend time getting to know your team and this will increase your standing with them. Only this time around, you can only interact with them on the ship. Also, you have Paragon and Renegade points. Hmm, light and dark? How original.
I guess we can only pray that the sequel will indeed carry over our decisions and choices to make the story remain compelling and hope that this time they make exploring planets worth while and expansive.

Re: Mass Effect, first impressions.

Uhhhh...Yeah, you do know that Bioware didn't make Kotor 2 right?

I do agree with some of your points. (I haven't finished yet...I've barely had time to play, what with relatives being in for Thanksgiving and everything :P). You very rarely have to use any biotic powers in combat, and it is relatively easy (took me a bit to get used to, but after I got through Eden Prime, I basically had everything figured out, and haven't died since).

The sidequests were kind of disconnected from the main plot, and I found they weren't particularly good. I preferred Kotor's sidequest, to be honest.

I was disappointed in the exploration aspect too, but other than that, I've had very few problems with the game.

The main story and characters are compelling, the combat, while not all that challenging, is still quite a lot of fun, weapon upgrades worked well, I think, not having to change your party around is another facet of the lack of difficulty (I would suggest ramping it up next time around, if you found it that easy...), and, being that I'm playing as an engineer, it's pretty important, to me, how I level up my party members because engineers are almost worthless in combat.

Re: Mass Effect, first impressions.

It is true that Bioware wasn't involved with Kotor II but it was similar in style and structure to Kotor 1 so I lumped them together. Sorry for generalizing. You are right though that perhaps choosing a different, less combat oriented, class would indeed make it a touch more difficult. I don't think that you should need to pick a certain class for difficulty purposes though. If someone is a soldier, then the games AI should be alot harder to contend with in combat while making Tech a bit more lax. One thing I found a bit discouraging was the lack of needing specialized team formations etc. By this I mean that there should have been situations where you absolutely needed the kick-butt tech skills of Tali' , while other area's required the biotics of Liara. Not all issues should be resolved by brute force. Plus I found very few instances where the optional dialouge made any difference. I felt after the game had finished that I had wasted my points in Charm and intimidate. Although intimidate was mostly weak because I went with Paragon as my gamestyle( I never can be evil, I have tried and it doesn't work...)
As far as the upgrades go, they worked wonders, but I felt held back a little still. I suppose I got used to Starwars Galaxies where almost each and every weapon was unique because of all the varying stats on the resources that went into it. I admit though that it was fun having to switch between tungsten rounds and shredder rounds for Synthetics and Organics respectively.

Re: Mass Effect, first impressions.

Yeah, I understand what your saying. Tech and biotics really just weren't all that useful, and I have run into a few situations where the dialogs the same, no matter what your response.

I just got a little further in the plot...holy crap...just when Saren was getting to a point of ridiculous evilness...I can't say any more really without posting spoilers. Suffice it to say, my hunch when they first announced Saren was right.

Re: Mass Effect, first impressions.

Yeah, he is he epitome of evil. The reason isn't in his actions entirely either, but in his belief and resolve that he is doing the right thing for the universe. It is twisted to the point where you really want to believe him. I can't say more now because of spoilers too
:(
But the story is awesome.

Re: Mass Effect, first impressions.

I HATE THE 360 >.< (i was gonna play it at a friend's house but he got A RED RING) HOPE THAT WHEN I GET THE MONEY TO BUY ONE THIS PROBLEM IS SOLVED
