An article on Reuters suggest that Metal Gear Solid 4 will be the "last of the great exclusives" and talks about the death of third party exclusivity as well the high costs that factor into their demise. Of note was a comment from MGS4 assistant producer Ryan Payton who stated that Guns of the Patriots would need to sell one million copies in the first day alone if the high development costs are to be justified.

In the first day, on the PlayStation 3, is a lofty goal, and proof positive that third party exclusivity just isn't worth it anymore. Will MGS4 manage such a feat? Well, without saying it's impossible, let us just say that it's about as likely as Darth Vader being Luke Skywalker's father and the creator of C3-PO while discovering that The Force is actually made up of hundreds of tiny germ people.

G4's Adam Sessler agrees that Metal Gear Solid 4 isn't going to be a modern day miracle. "No, Metal Gear Solid 4 isn't the killer app," Sessler states in the article. "People who already own a PS3 will likely get it. But it doesn't have that kind of broad-based appeal." I adore Metal Gear Solid, and I'm inclined to nod along with him. Metal Gear is not a system-shifter. Never has been, never will be. A sales spike is possible, but Solid Snake will never be as mainstream as Mario.

Now, what were we saying about MGS4 on the 360?

isnt it just great :lol

High development costs hurt another game(possibly), and (maybe)remove one company for making Sony exclusives.

ok, here's another report

Metal Gear Solid 4 is turning into a third-party anomaly on the PS3. For Sony's sake it continues to be an officially non-timed PS3 exclusive even when others have left for greener pastures, but on the other hand its production costs are extreme for publisher Konami, and the big question is: How are they going to make that money back? Ryan Payton, assistant producer for MGS4, told Reuters that the game needs to sell one million units on its first day due to its production costs. We don't know if Payton is expecting a global launch, but just for a point of reference, in the US that would require 50% of PS3 owners to buy the game on the first day.

One million units on day one is a Reed Richards stretch; we're certainly curious to know how Konami is going to justify the exclusivity of MGS4 financially. If an efficiently produced game like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune cost $20 million, we can only wonder what a game with the production levels of MGS4 cost. There's a much deeper story here about the cost of MGS4 and Konami, but those answers probably won't shake out until long after MGS4 releases.

But what if it's on the second day? Is it going to make that big of a deal?

This'll make developers not want to do PS3 exclusives. :/ Looks like beyond first party titles, nothing will really show off the PS3's power now.

Reminds me of Nintendo.
PS3 the next GCN? And if you mean Wiiwise, go look at the screenshot for Monster Hunter 3.

I bet it looks like a PS2 game

Besides the fact that it doesn't, the Wii is several times more powerful than the PS2.

@Frodus, true, but uh...Prime 3.

Why not? It could be the start of PS3 losing third party exclusives, considering MGS4 is one of the biggest PS3 games next year.

@Frodus: Prime 3 is an amazing looking game, everyone says so, even people reviewing for magazines with things like the 360 on the PS3, and Prime 3 has how many framerate problems?

None.

A. It'll sell well over 1 million units on the first day. I'll bet on that.

B. Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted...the PS3 has good games and undoubtedly more to come. It has about as many good games as the Wii right now.

But Prime was developed by Nintendo... That doesnt mean that a third party dev. may or may not have problems with it.

EDIT: And saying that only first party devs are gunna unlock the potential of the PS3. Case in point: CoD4

Prime was developed by second party Retro Studios.
