Lately my ps2 has been running a bit werid, it keeps freezing on explosions and long loading screens. Also it keeps scratching the discs a lot. I tryed to clean it twice, but that had no effect on the disc scratching. If someone had this problem or seen someone who had this problem, please tell me. I had my PS2 for about 3 years now and it's been standing up the whole time.

Could it just be that it's getting old?

well.... I forget the ratio.... but Ps2's do break down a lot.

now.... is your tray messed up at all? I cannot figure out why your PS2 would be scratching Cds... that is ODD to me!

cleaning wont do. if it's scratching discs the cd isn't spinning evenly. This would also explain why you have the longer load times and the random game freezing. If the disc isn't exactly even the laser is hitting a different place on the disc than it should.

As far as what's physically wrong there's no telling w/o opening the ps2 up. first course of action would be to see if the thing was still under warranty, if not there's many step by step guides to many simple fixes all over the internet. You can even buy one off of ebay that's actually very good.

By standing up do you mean it was vertical instead of horizontal? That alone will create the problem you seem to be having, where it skews to one side of the disc and scratches it up. Have you tried laying the PS2 flat and playing discs? It might help.

Yes my tray is a little, when i open it it rattles. Is that a big deal?

well.. it can make a difference if the CD is spinning off (like Target) stated.

but doesn't the CD spin out of the tray when its being read?
If there is tray wobble on the inside while the cd is spinning... that can cause problems.

but... honestly, listen to mai or target... they (most likely) know better than I do.

Ok alright, i'll just not play as much a day, lay my ps2 down and i'll hope for the best :D

it's the laying it horizontal more than likely. that's why the original ps2 of mine fried. laser got eventually shitted out b/c of the vertical nonsense. idiots release the vert stand and pretty much encourage the things to break. ever since long ago keeping it horizontal, i haven't seen the circular scratches that used to happen. it's well advised to any ps2 owner to keep the thing horizontal during play

Yeah, isn't it nice of Sony to release a vertical stand knowing that placing the PS2 vertical makes the lens go out faster? :lol It's a good way to guarantee PS2 sales, anyway.

:lol

didn't you ever wonder why their sales were so high? :lol

crap... what is it... 1-in-3 or 1-in-6 go to the shop?

Oh, I've always thought that part of the reason why the PS2 had such huge sale numbers was because half of them were people replacing their broken PS2s. Sony denies it, of course. And if you ask one of their store reps about the vertical stand, they will tell you that it works fine and won't hurt your PS2.

But the number of people I've had come in to both Wal-Mart and GameStop buying their second, third, or even fourth PS2 is nothing to sneeze at. At your fourth PS2 it's kind of like, "OK, and you're not mad about it, why?" Just because Sony mass produces the PS2 doesn't automatically mean that we should put up with "bad batches." I'm pretty sure that MS and Nintendo mass produce their consoles too, yet the return rates of those are far lower than what I've seen with the PS2.

MS... is quite a bit lower... but Nintendo has a PHENOMINAL success rate with systems.
Their systems just last forever (lets not get into the NES argument here).

NOW... this is why I am very worried about the PSP.... doesn't that worry you all?

Yes, and that's why I'm taking a wait-and-see approach with the PSP. Both to see what the quality is like and to see if any games come out that I want.

I've had my PS2 for over a year and a half now, and it only had the occasional error. All I did was eject/insert the disk again, and it worked.

Been vertical most of it's life and still is.
