Segatron Genesis... call me the wizard.
Owning a PS3 makes having a PS2 seem almost silly...AT FIRST....then you have to realize "Wait a minute, some games won't work on a PS3 80GB model!"
This is true, but however, when Sony is always at work on fixing the errors and glitches per game from the PS2 and PS1 library, in each upcoming update via free downloadable patches. What is one to do?
Unless you own a 60GB PS3 Model, then you don't have to worry about jack squat when it comes to playing a PS2 or PS1 game.
So the following listed below, is for mostly 60 and 80GB models that have the backwards compatiblity
The upper advantage to a PS3 over an actual PS2? Smoothing out graphics on 2D fighters, fixing the resolution, and having the alternative HDMI signal for those lucky enough. (Trust me, seeing a 2D fighter in an HDMI signal is gorgeous, as long as you put the graphics to SMOOTH via the options when you press the PS button in the middle). Your disc never get scratched or anything, because the PS3's Tray handles your disc like it was a king with no hassle at all. A Big fat harddrive that handles everything for you when it comes to saves, you can even make multiple "Virtual" memory cards on the Harddrive, that you name yourself, so you can remember which is which..so that the PS2/PS1 game thinks there's a real memory card inside, when in reality, there isn't. Wireless controller that charges very quickly and feels so lite weight. No messy add-ons needed, like harddrive or network adapter, since it has those built in and you can even download for free, the original PS2 harddrive program, so that the PS3 can fool PS2 games that utilize this feature, to think there is a PS2 Harddrive inside. Way to go on that one Sony.
Disadvantage? No rumble feature in the controller (Not yet until next spring with another controller they will release), can't use Guitars from Guitar Hero (Unless you hunt down a device that will allow you to do so, but I haven't heard any USB to PS2 controller convertors that are successful). Not having the cool feature of swapping disc on your favorite FF game from PS1...just a simple "Eject" and switch. Your memory cards from PS2 and PS1 can be transferred if you want to have your cool game saves, but you need to find the silly memory card transfer kit ($15 value), yet once they are, your memory cards are useless and everything will be snug and cozy on the PS3's Harddrive. Which brings back to the point, you just wasted $15 on a ONE time transfer only...you could have just easily borrowed this device from a friend for 1 hour.
Misc notes:
For those of you whom remember the video showing Final Fantasy X being compared PS2 Vs. PS3.
That has REALLY changed since recent updates. If you were to compare the two right now...which I have...you will see the PS3 has fixed the brightness and resolutions drastically, compared to that original video shown back from last year. I will say, from my 27' inch HDTV Samsung, both games running in 480p (Since the PS2 only handles Component cable in that signal). The PS3 made FF10 look brighter, crisper, and smoother when I put it on "Smooth" and "full screen" effect on the PS3.
So after my studies, what is one to do? Should I keep the PS2 or no?
