What do you think? Personally, doesn't matter who's doing them, they all suck. Either they don't rely on the game, just the title or something, and they're one of two things. Sub par or perfectly capable of being a totally separate movie. Or if they do rely on the game, they're just sub par. Games give you enjoyment because you're part of the experience, doing things your way, and having fun doing it. You can't have that same level of interaction with a movie.

I thought Silent Hill was pretty good, but I haven't played the games, so I don't really have a good comparison.

The Dead or Alive movie had so much wrong with it, but I still enjoyed it just because it was so absurd that it was funny. Why is Ayane white? Why is Helena so happy? Why does an assassin like Christie have a boyfriend? These are questions only a DOA fan would be able to ask, because if you have never played DOA, you wouldn't know how much is wrong with the movie. :lol

The Tomb Raider movies were ok. I liked the first one better.

I liked the resident evil movies besides the second one, Mortal Kombat was done really well also. Silent Hill was actually one of the best movies based off of a game. Also FFVII:AC But, those are really the only good ones out...

King of Kong was a good movie though even just being about games.

I thought the first Mortal Kombat was good. Tomb Raider was good. I liked the second one more. I think it's because I love anything that has to do with ancient history (even though the movie threw a major Hollywood twist in it).

I am at the opinion that not all game-based movies suck, although a vast majority do.

There's a fine line that has to be walked when it comes to video game movies. One one side, you have to stay true to the source material for any fans of the game to even enjoy it. But, if you stay too close, it becomes downright boring if every single moment is recalled (I mean, who'd want to watch Cloud run down a railroad for a half an hour, swinging his sword at the occasional pointy beaked bird?).

The again, if you stary too far, the only people who have a chance of liking it (AKA the tiny minority) are usually the people who have no idea what the movie is based off of. See: Uwe Boll and "Alone in the Dark"

The Resident Evil and Silent Hill movies are good examples of this. Take the concept of the game, but don't butcher it too much.

Are we counting Advent Children? Best video-game movie I've ever seen. I also like Silent Hill and the Resident Evil movies.

Advent Children? I will never, ever, understand why people like that movie. The animation was top notch, I'll agree, but I was completely lost in the story/characters/events that took place. I never, at any time, knew why anything was happening. As a sequence of CG cutscenes for a videogame, they would be great, as a movie, utter trash.

I did like The Spirits Within though. The ending was kind of cheesy, but otherwise I really enjoyed it.

I think the potential for great videogame movies exist, but a lot of times the wrong videogames are chosen to be turned into a movie, or the people making the film don't care about the videogame. If they picked a game like The Getaway then the movie would practically make itself. The characters are already there, the storyline is there, the general aesthetic feel is there, just get a director with a little vision and shoot it.

Wait...have you played FFVII? It tells you right at the beginning of FFVII Advent Children that it takes place two years after. Pretty easy to understand the story unless you haven't payed attention too much to FFVII.

No, I haven't played through FFVII. I don't think that should matter. I've never had to play a videogame to understand a movie before.

Either way, I watched it with two people who had played through FFVII multiple times, and neither of them could tell me why anything was happening. They filled me in on the character names and names of the areas they were in, but it was still just a mismash of people/places/and events that at best were loosely correlated if you played the game, and at worst completely incomprehensible if you hadn't. My friends sort of knew what was going on, but they both admitted it still didn't make much sense, and the sense it did make was pretty bland and uninteresting.

I expect movies to tell a story, call me crazy. AC gave me the distinct impression that it was simply a flimsy pretext to show some cool animation. That's not the direction I want to see videogame movies go in. If I wasn't a fan of both videogames and movies, AC would have turned me off of any future videogame movie.

FFVII AC tells an awesome story. if your friends have played the game multiple times and didnt understand the movie, then they obviously didnt play through the game, and just read the names on the back of the box. it continues exactly one year after the game left off. it was also beautifully done, the most intricate CG i have ever seen in a film. its simply masterful.

Yeah, you definitely need to play FFVII to understand Advent Children. Hence, it happens TWO years after the game's events...yeah...kinda important to know the story. Idk why it was so easy for me to understand and for you not to if that wasn't the case. :)
