What would happen if EA created a console?

It's a rumor. So let's just pray it doesn't happen.

With all the developers EA has under its belt, we'd see a loss of multi-platform releases from EA for sure, along with alot of great games only appearing on an EA console. What do you guys think?

Debate and discuss. :)

If EA does this, and sells it only through Walmart, we should all run for the hills because the world as we know it will come to an end.

I would never buy the thing, even if it meant I couldn't play anymore BioWare games. EA has to be the most disgusting, bottom line-centric game maker in existence, and I would neve support them, even if it means I won't be able to play Kotor 3.

Unfortunately, if it does happen, people will use the excuse that said game was only on it and that's why they "had" to get it.

Then they are a bunch of idealess sellouts. I would be spitting on the corpses of Westwood and Bullfrog if I were to buy an EA console, and that is something I will simply never do.

I agree, but that's just the sad realization of what would happen.

Didn't EA at one point publicly declare they would never make their own console cuz there's too much risk and they're making money hand over fist as it is?

Either way, exploring the hypothetical, I don't actually mind EA as much as most people seem to. I abhor their business practices, but that is because I abhor the nature of business itself. If other companies could do it as well they would *cough*Activision*cough*, the fact that EA is good at it doesn't make them any worse than the rest who wish they could.

I absolutely hate how they come out with a new sports game every single year. I also hate how because, for some reason, that mentality seems justified with updated rosters, franchises, etc., that other companies all of a sudden start expanding that mentality to cover every subject matter that could be considered a sport, such as WWE. THQ used to come out with wrestling games every couple years on the 64 once there was a significant amount added to the game to warrant a new one. But now they follow EA's model of annual releases as though a wrestling game needed an annual update.

However, Madden is consistently one of the top selling games year after year. As a business, it doesn't make sense for them to stop operating this way until it stops making them money. If EA were to make a console I think it would become over saturated with this concept running in the back of their minds. It might do extremely well, but I wouldn't buy it, or I would at least hold off for many years until the price dropped, because the games that would have launched with the system would be the same games coming out that year as well.

I think EA makes more money by putting as many games on as many consoles as possible. I think it would actually cut their revenue to restrict their games to just one console, especially a new console. It would be unproven, and they couldn't guarantee that they would have enough people buy an EA console to make up for how much they would be losing by not putting games on the other consoles.

Agree.

I don't see the point in EA making a console. I mean, why ruin their already good franchise by making their own console, then restricting their games only to their system. Of ource, they may still make it for all other consoles, but that would ever more reduce the renevue they'd be getting because few would even bother getting an EA only console, just to play EA games, when they can ge tthe same thing on the console they have that plays games from all different companies.

if EA create their own console then they're only going to ruin themselves and stuff up a business that's been proving successful for years, and still has just as much opportunity to continue its success.

That's what they said when their CEO wanted to launch a console in the early 90's. I wouldn't be surprised if they still feel the same.

See, I think that might be reason to make one. Instead of going multiplatform, people would have to buy EA's console to play said game or franchise. All the Madden nuts out there. I guarantee an overwhelming amount would buy an EA console JUST to play Madden and I'm sure fans of other franchises EA has taken control of would buy EA just because it would be the only console with their favorite game on it.

I skimmed and no one's said it yet. They're only going to start plans for it if the PS3 doesn't pick up sales by 2010.

Yeah, that's why it's called a rumor. And if they're only going to do it if the PS3 doesn't pick up sales by 2010, then we can all rest easy. The PS3's selling very good now.

Obviously, it isn't selling good enough for EA. It's sold 10.5 million units as of the beginning of the year, not sure where it stands now.

I'm thinking EA would consider joining the fray if no one console emerges dominant, like the PS2 did. That's what I think they mean by "PS3 sales picking up." Apparently, they're thinking the PS3 is the most likely to take control of the market.
