Another way? Licensing agreements. And I do hear that Microsoft is developing their own games. Either way there are two economical reasons to go further in merchandise. It's to get your name out at a loss so you can make a profit on the tail end.
If that ain't proof enough, just look at Bill Gates. I am sure that he's not a complete idiot if he can point Microsoft in the most successful direction.

What does this have to do with Microsoft and the Xbox? The "profit" gained if not monitary is the popularity that seems to be driving Xbox360 sales. It's not smart economics, but it is smart business. Microsoft is the newbie. And since Nintendo has been stamping out consoles since the early 80s, and Sony since the 90s, their reputation is already grounded.
In all honesty, if Bill Gates wanted microsoft out of debt with this, he'd jus write a couple checks.

I agree with Strubes. However, I am also petty. I tried to balance those two characteristics in my response, but it still leans towards petty.
Speaking of ignorant responses that you can't back up... unless you have some sort of mystical time machine in which you travelled to the future and retrieved several documents which proclaim the Xbox 360 to be unprofitable you are blowing hot air, and to be perfectly honest, it's warm enough as it is.
I'm not sure exactly where this statement came from, as I never stated that the Wii would or would not succeed in any way. I'm also not sure what you mean by "people like you," but I assume you're referring to gamers who actually desire to see the controller practically apply it's possibilites to a game, in which case you might very well be correct.

After Microsoft's 1st Xbox price cut... they were losing something like $133 MILLION every 3 months. While the system MIGHT have had success in gaining popularity... I think Microsoft would be VERY hard pressed to showing a profit on the system. But sometimes you need to lose money the 1st time around to gain the popularity, right? It's not impossible... but I would say it's not probable.
