How I spent my day:

...assisted on an autopsy, went out for dinner with some friends, then went out for a drink with another friend...

...to be repeated tomorrow?!

Going into medicine tends to turn you away from a lot of different foods. :sick

My diet before 2005 compared to now is quite different. Every new position has shown me new things about how diets affect health.

What do u do about iron and protein in your diet? My sis is a vegetarian and my mom pretty much is too (think my mom eats fish once a year er something) and my sister in law is a vegetarian too. Most of my siblings don't like meat much..my brother is either vegetarian or close to it. I do eat some meat, but very little (I get grossed out easily by anything that looks like it used to walk around...tendons, fat, veins etc. To the point that sometimes I cannot eat the meat if I am the one who cooked it.
I don't see any of my siblings doing anything much about getting their iron tho, or protein. I am most concerned about my youngest sister getting calcium. :/

I recall when I was a kid my dad would by a lil tin of frog legs every so often...u know those lil tins with the pull back lids like sardines come in. He was always so happy when he got to have those as we were very poor, so it was a special treat to him. They looked nasty...old wet frog legs .....eeeewwwww

Men do not require as much iron as women do since men retain more hemoglobin monthly. I have been avoiding red meat, but have still had sushi with salmon or crab in it a few times in the last month. Also, grains like quinoa have all essential amino acids. Some grain combinations, like Kashi's 7 grain palif, have all the essential proteins (including lysine provided by sesame seeds).

I also still eat Greek yogurt, which is high in protein.

I certainly think it would be difficult for a strict vegan in the midwest, but really, there are plenty of food options out there.

Chipotle and Penn Station are two places I have eaten at recently that have great options. A Chipotle burrito with fajita veggies offers protein via black beans. Penn Station has a great artichoke sandwhich, with some protein provided by mushrooms and cheese.

Also, many vegetables do have calcium, brocoli and sesame seeds both come to mind as excellent sources.

After seeing some patient's conditions, avoiding the fats in red meat just seems like a good idea..

Spinach has iron and protein. Popeye taught me that.

Don't think I can ever truly get rid of red meat. I love BBQ way too much, but I have cut down. I mostly eat turkey and chicken now along with more green vegetables like spinach. Been hitting the gym and I'm slowly changing my diet. I've noticed my stomach feels better and I tend to have more energy.

I eat red meat maybe once, twice a week. And that's usually homemade, very lean meat. I get most of my protein from eggs, pasta, and soups.

I really like eggs, tho I like to boil em and only eat the white parts...I wonder if I am missing out on anything important by not eating the centers? I eat em in omellettes etc tho with the centers there.

My husbands diet consists of red meat, cookies, granola bars, salami, chicken strips, pizza, ice cream, chocolate milk, burgers, poutine (fries with gravy and cheese on top), chili, bacon, omelets, potato chips, garlic toast with cheese on it, stroganoff, perogies with tons of sour cream on them etc. He for real eats no veggies whatsoever (except for a few in his occasional chili). He eats no fruit either except for an apple or a couple grapes once a year. He mostly eats meat, sugar and fat. He is very, very thin...so his appearance is deceptively healthy looking, but I wonder how his insides are looking :/ I don't really feel like it is my place to control his food intake tho, so I just buy whatever he likes to eat and feed it to him. I do do a few things tho, like buying low fat frozen yogurt sometimes, or making a very low fat chili, or making baked white bread to eat instead of cheesy garlic toast a lot....still not the best but has tons less butter and no cheese. Mostly, I just feel what people eat is there prerogative for the most part. I just wish he could somehow learn to be able to eat fruit or veggies without gagging er throwing up.

He likes me to eat with him, so since moving to Canada I find myself eating extremely different then before. I have managed currently to eat really low fat healthy things during the day and only eating junk stuff at night after he is home from work (know that is a bad time to be eating crap) but i still try to eat just a lil of it and to modify what I am eating to be healthier. :s
